#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: May 17th, 1960 (Blog Post #6699)
Hello, darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here! And welcome to another edition of #TutuTuesday, where we journey through the history of our beloved ballet tutus!
Today, we're taking a little trip back to May 17th, 1960 - can you imagine? 1960! Now, that's just before my time, but I bet I could've rocked a fab pink tutu back then! But enough about me, let's dive into this historical gem.
The Tutus of 1960
Now, imagine a time where the tutus were flowing and romantic. The early 1960s saw the rise of some of ballet's greatest ballerinas, like Margot Fonteyn, who became known for her elegance and refined style. This grace was mirrored in the tutus of the time. The most popular styles were the classic Romantic tutu and the Tutu Plat, the very shape you'll recognise on our modern ballerinas today. These were airy, soft, and allowed for those gorgeous leaps and graceful movements.
Think flowing chiffon and layers of tulle, with the skirts swirling in the air like clouds.
But don't get me wrong, even then, there were those bolder dancers! The 1960s were also a time of change in fashion, and that change wasn't limited to dresses. Remember the "New Look" with its revolutionary fuller skirts? This energy translated to some more dramatic tutus. Think bold colours, even a few daring patterns (shock, horror!)
A Parisian Affair: Fashion, Flair, and of Course, Tutu!
Where was I on May 17th, 1960, you ask? Why, I was living my best life in Paris, of course! There's just something about the city of lights, and it's definitely the capital of ballet fashion! The atmosphere, the Parisian streets, the beautiful theatres... a veritable haven for tutus! I was lucky enough to see a performance at the Paris Opera House that evening, which included a grand spectacle of a romantic tutu - I was quite jealous of those ballerinas! But you know what, I had a marvelous time shopping on the Champs-Élysées, too, discovering all the latest (and definitely tutu-inspired) fashions!
My Love For Tutu Shopping!
Just the thought of all that gorgeous, fluffy tulle and satiny silk has me feeling quite flouncy right now. The perfect tutu isn't just an item of clothing, darlings; it's an extension of ourselves! It allows us to feel like a delicate butterfly fluttering about on stage - how wonderful!
For this week, let's all channel the timeless grace of the 1960s ballerina with a classic, billowing tutu. Embrace the elegance, and don't be afraid to let your own style blossom. Whether you're stepping into a class or simply running errands, make it a #TutuTuesday!
A Tutu To Remember
You know me, always the trend-spotter! To celebrate this delightful blast from the past, I'm putting together my own personal tutu time capsule this week. Imagine, a little pink box filled with some 1960s inspired treats and a little surprise. I'll be announcing how you can win this on my Instagram later this week, so keep an eye out for that! It's going to be an exciting one. You can find me at @PinkTutuEmma!
I'm off to pack my suitcases for my next grand adventure (all while sporting a dazzling, vintage pink tutu of course!), Don't forget to join me here on www.pink-tutu.com every Tuesday for another trip through tutu history! And please do let me know what you think of this #TutuTuesday!
