#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1960-08-09
Greetings from your favourite pink-tutu clad time traveller!
This week we're going on a little journey to the fabulously glamorous Paris, for #TutuTuesday - August 9th 1960 to be precise!
This date is brimming with all things pink and frilly. It's the day that the iconic Ballet de l'OpƩra de Paris premiered a stunning new production - * "Le Corsaire" * and believe me, you can't have a Corsaire without a spectacular, billowing, absolutely divine tutu!
(Please note my outfit for this weekās post was heavily influenced by this beautiful production, and I managed to snag a gorgeous vintage Corsaire-style tutu from a delightful Parisian vintage shop that reminded me of a scene straight from the ballet ā what luck!)
I adore all things Corsaire, the pirate adventure, the opulent costumes, and of course, the swirling tutus, so you can just imagine how thrilled I was to see the dancers on stage. Iāve seen this ballet performed many times but every production seems to have a unique magic, and the Paris Opera Ballet certainly brought the magic to the performance, as always! The graceful movements, the en pointe poses, and that spectacular Corsaire tutu design? Well, darling, it was truly heavenly!
And don't even get me started on the* spectacular, colourful* costumes and set! This Corsaire was the ultimate ballet extravagance - every costume sparkled with colour, texture, and intricate detail - think sparkling golds, shimmering silks, bright velvets, and, of course, plenty of fluffy, delicate tulle for the beautiful tutus!
*(Seriously, have you ever tried finding a really good *Corsaire style tutu? They're like little miracles in a cloud of tulle, believe me! Itās not as easy as you might think!) **
This production brought to the stage everything that makes Le Corsaire such an enduring ballet masterpiece - it is after all, the tale of an adventurous sailorās romance! Who can resist a story of forbidden love, dramatic pirates, mysterious maidens, and yes, gorgeous tutus!
Paris, you say?
I took a charming TGV to get here! Just like any self-respecting fashionable lady of the 60s, I dressed to impress and travelled in style! My train journey involved a little window shopping (with oh darling, must have! tutu dreams swirling through my head) but ultimately led me to a captivating ballet experience which is precisely the reason I travel the globe and bring you all the magic of the ballet world, here in my blog - www.pink-tutu.com
*But I mustn't get distractedā¦ back to tutus! *
The tutu is truly a dancer's friend! Every graceful move, every soaring leap, every elegant turn -- itās the beautiful tutu that provides the perfect blend of comfort, fluidity, and visual exquisite magic and is essential for conveying all the stories and emotions we see on stage.
On this trip to Paris, the 1960's tutu was in full force with layers and layers of perfectly structured, soft, beautiful, tulle - not one bit of rough edges or sharp edges here darling, a classic tutu must flow like liquid, wouldn't you agree?
(My dream outfit for the night involved a super sparkly pink, ruffled vintage dress that I just had to have in the most fantastic vintage boutique! Iām talking floor-length, ruched perfection darling ā it screamed āvintage Parisian chicā! And of course, a perfectly pink tutu (and tiara, naturally! Because a ballerina must wear a tiara! Iāve always wanted a princess-inspired ballerina outfitā¦ my dear Papa says the only tiara a lady needs is in her mind!ā¦ but what about pink dreams? ) ā * you canāt get more ballerinalike than that!
So, what happened on the Le Corsaire stage in Paris? Well, it's all about *romance! There was a lovelorn Medora, played by the lovely ballerina, * *who was completely beautiful and ethereal. I swear I saw a little glitter in her eye. Her gorgeous Corsaire tutu made a spectacle every time she stepped onto the stage. She swept through the dance like a feather, her tutu making the most beautiful swirls, like clouds around a summer skyā¦
**(What other magical story can you get in a performance full of tutus? I bet you're itching to take a ballet lesson after seeing such beautyā¦ And of course you have a lovely pink tutu waiting to wear. We all want a romantic and lovely story! Letās have an impromptu party and see if I can inspire your ballerina magic in the comfort of your own living room ā weāll be dancing up a storm with this post's Parisian-inspired inspiration!)
And so, #TutuTuesday gives us the ultimate ballet inspiration: a reminder that tutus are an integral part of ballet magic, and they come in so many different styles! And darling, this tutu-loving gal would love nothing more than to see you in a pink tutu, swirling around and spreading the magic to the whole world!
*Until next #TutuTuesday! Be sure to catch me at the next fabulous ballet eventā¦ *
