#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: November 29th, 1960 – The Tutu Takes Flight!

Hello my darlings! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-licious! It's #TutuTuesday and, as always, we're stepping back in time to uncover another fabulous tutu tale! This week we're whisked back to 1960, and trust me, darlings, this year was positively bursting with ballet brilliance!

(This is post #6727, just in case you fancy a bit of tutu-licious history yourself, don’t forget to pop over to our archives – I’ve got years worth of stories for you! )

Today’s adventure takes us right back to November 29th, 1960. This date was pretty darn special, even before you add in the magic of the tutu! Why, you ask? Because it's the very day the magnificent Royal Opera House (our very own Covent Garden – don’t forget, darlings, it's not just an opera house – it’s also the Royal Ballet’s stunning home!) launched its very own ballet season. Just imagine – a whole season of twirling, leaping, and tutus galore! Ooh la la!

(Did you know, my lovelies? *Covent Garden isn’t the *only London ballet hot-spot – if you fancy some street ballet or some spectacular performances, The Royal Albert Hall, * Sadler’s Wells Theatre* and even The Barbican Centre have something fab going on.)

Now, you’re all wondering - what fabulous tutu trends are sweeping through 1960? Well, darling, let’s dive in! It's an era of both classic elegance and bold, breathtakingly bold, experimental choreography. And wouldn’t you know it? The tutu is evolving just as fast as the dances themselves.

Gone are the days of the traditional long, billowing tutu - we're stepping into a new world of tight tutus, darlings. Yes! Those delightful "bell-shaped", almost mini-skirt-like tutus that allow for those dazzling jumps and lightning-fast turns are making a real impact! (Did I mention those jumps and turns? Swoon)

But don’t worry - the romantic fluffy tutu is still around – those sweeping layers are still a sight to behold! They are being beautifully combined with these tighter, sleeker versions. A true evolution of style – what a dazzling sight it all must have been!

Now, I do adore a bit of shopping myself, and when you travel back in time to London in 1960, the city is bursting with all things ballet-related! From* lavish department stores* like Harrods and Liberty’s to quaint shops on* Oxford Street,* and don’t forget Covent Garden Market! These streets are lined with shops absolutely full of dazzling outfits – it’s truly the peak of vintage fashion darling!

(You’ve got to go to Harrods – oh darling, those fabulous fabrics! From velvet and silk to lace – oh, those beautiful tutus! Oh my word. Let’s just say I took the entire department home with me – luckily, with my trusty time travel tutu pocket * I always pack room!)

While shopping for that perfect new outfit (let's face it, we need something new for every tutu occasion!), let’s not forget about those exquisite, handmade tutu workshops. It's like stepping into a magical dream world! They are often run by family and old and new ballet dancers. Just imagine – generational tutu know-how and an endless stream of pastel pink and sparkling jewels! And if you're feeling particularly adventurous, darling, try your hand at designing your very own tutu. Imagine! A tutu that’s perfectly unique and as special as you are – I live for this kind of thing!

The excitement doesn't stop at the shops, darling – even restaurants and tea rooms are buzzing with ballet fever. The after-show talk, the anticipation and the reviews fill the air with talk of the very latest shows, rising stars, and the ever-evolving fashion trends! (This is the kind of buzz that I really miss! We can only get so much conversation out of cats, I’ve found!)

Imagine that! London 1960. The Royal Ballet is dancing its heart out – it's truly a time of unbridled elegance and grace. A time when the ballet tutu is an emblem of artistry, inspiration, and absolute magic. Just the way it should be!

And this, my darlings, is just the tip of the iceberg – don't forget The Royal Ballet School, a veritable hotbed of future dance talent, has it's very own tradition and style.

Right then, my dear ballet beauties!

We've travelled back in time, admired the magnificent tutu, been dazzled by the artistry, and soaked in the glamour. Time to say goodbye! And please, remember: it's all about embracing that beautiful, whimsical joy of the ballet tutu. It doesn't matter your age, your shape, or your style! Wear it with confidence, twirl with abandon, and spread that tutu magic far and wide!

Don’t forget – every Tuesday I'm right here to chat tutus!
I’ll see you then – and remember, darlings – let's make the world pink… one tutu at a time!

Sending you all my love, and my very best wishes!
