#TutuTuesday: A Blast From the Past (1961-04-18)

Hello darlings! Emma here, back from a delightful little trip through time and ready to share my #TutuTuesday adventures. This week we're stepping back to the fabulous 18th of April, 1961 – just imagine, it was a whole six decades ago! Honestly, even back then, a pink tutu would have had heads turning, but what was everyone else sporting?

Let me whisk you back to the era, straight to the heart of ballet, where it all started, Paris. Oh, Paris in the early '60s... such style! The city of lights was ablaze with chic boutiques showcasing the latest fashions, the Champs-Élysées teeming with elegant Parisians sporting the season's must-have outfits. You simply had to be seen wearing a sleek pencil skirt with a fitted jacket or a beautifully crafted shift dress. Remember those iconic Christian Dior 'New Look' silhouettes? This was the decade that brought us those wonderful cinched-in waists and flowing skirts!

Of course, what was fashion without a little flair? Remember when the fabulous Coco Chanel reinvented the little black dress? That was the real revolution! So elegant, timeless, and absolutely captivating!

Speaking of revolution... we can't forget the darling ballerina Margot Fonteyn! On the 18th of April, 1961, she took the stage at Covent Garden in "The Sleeping Beauty" – now, that's what I call iconic! Just picturing the grace and artistry of Fonteyn in her classical tutus… breathtaking!

Don’t you just love ballet? I can still remember my first visit to the ballet. My mama and I went to a grand old theatre in Buxton, my hometown, and it felt as though we'd been whisked away to another world. I knew from that day that I just had to become a ballerina! It wasn't all tutus and twirls, of course! I was fortunate to get my training with Madame La Plume at a little studio in Derby – a true icon who insisted we only wore the most glorious ballet shoes and ribbons – you know the sort! The perfect ballerina shoe needs to feel just like another part of you!

But it wasn’t just the ballet that stole my heart! There was a little magic to be found in almost every street corner in those days! There was such excitement to be had! Fashion was a passion, and even shopping was an adventure! Do you remember the days when you could pop into a shop, try on a skirt, and have the most delightful chat with the lovely lady behind the counter while you twirled in front of the mirror, feeling utterly glamorous? Now that was fashion!

But wait! This blog wouldn't be complete without mentioning how we got here today, back to 2023, in my glorious pink tutu! As you all know, I travel through time, powered by the sheer joy of a stunning performance! Now, the ballet was, and remains, a magnificent performance art, but there are other treasures to be found! The London Palladium in 1961 was brimming with iconic musical shows! We had “The Sound of Music,” the beloved “Oliver!” which would soon become a movie, and who could forget the one and only “Hello, Dolly!”, that delightful show brimming with incredible songs! I could see myself onstage in that one – oh my, how I adore a little sparkle and a catchy tune! I wouldn’t say that all the shows I have seen on my travels have had all been completely dazzling. Some, to be perfectly honest, were just lovely! Sometimes, however, it takes me back to those lovely days at Buxton and Derby. I really feel a connection to this time, a nostalgia for these times gone by. Oh, it feels like the happiest days of all time – that carefree energy, the bright smiles! Everyone just felt so jolly!

Of course, fashion was in full swing – think of the dazzling dresses that people would wear to these amazing shows! It must have been truly beautiful! So much colour!

This era in time was a world where tutus danced freely on the stage and the fashion of the streets shone brightly! It's a delightful place to travel through time!
