#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: The Swinging Sixties and Those Fabulous Frou Frous! (Post 6761)

Hey darlings! It’s your favourite pink-loving ballerina blogger, Emma, back with another exciting #TutuTuesday deep dive into the history of our beloved tutus! Buckle up, babes, because today we’re going all the way back to July 25th, 1961!

The year is a real corker. Think swinging London, bright colours, and an unashamed embrace of individuality - exactly what my little heart desires. But how did our gorgeous tutus fit into all this? Well, I’m happy to say they did, with a glamorous flourish!

Back to the 60s, Back to the Stage!

1961 saw the rise of a new breed of dancers and choreographers who were turning the world of ballet upside down - quite literally, I dare say! Think about Rudolf Nureyev, this captivating Russian dancer, taking the stage by storm in Paris. The man practically rewrote the rules of classical ballet, injecting power and passion into every performance, leaving audiences mesmerized.

His dance partner, Margot Fonteyn, was another revolutionary. An iconic figure on the London stage, her ethereal grace and artistry inspired countless young dancers to take their first pirouette.

It’s not all about ballet for me, though. Fashion is my passion! In the 60s, there was a revolution happening outside of the theatre. We were seeing daring silhouettes, vibrant hues, and audacious patterns. It was all about a fresh, playful, and yes, pink attitude! Imagine: bold prints, bell bottoms, mini skirts - and, you guessed it, tutus were the perfect finishing touch!

Remember that timeless look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, featuring the utterly glamorous Audrey Hepburn in her chic little black dress? Those wispy ballet-inspired tutus, though not technically ballet tutus, are what make that iconic outfit look so wonderfully whimsical!

So, how do we know that tutus were absolutely ruling the day on July 25th, 1961? Let’s see. Firstly, if we head to New York, the world’s leading dance city, we discover that the New York City Ballet was showcasing Jerome Robbins’ iconic “Afternoon of a Faun,” a ballet infused with the atmosphere of Debussy's score and fueled by delicate, flowing tutus. Just imagine, all that twirling on the stage, such ethereal elegance!

And let’s not forget "The Nutcracker," a holiday favourite that’s never truly gone out of style. In 1961, countless theatres were likely hosting their annual run of the charming tale, featuring delicate tulle and a touch of pink - which makes me swoon!

Now, let’s travel across the pond to my homeland. England was having its own fabulous fashion moment, fueled by the Mod look. The famous "mini-skirt" (think Mary Quant), the bold use of primary colors, and yes, the unmistakabletutus. There is a delightful connection between these styles and what’s happening on the stage, don’t you think?

Even in the world of cinema, tutus had their big moment! Imagine Julie Andrews starring in the classic film "The Sound of Music"! Who can forget her grace in those iconic flowing white dresses? Now, while they weren't ballet tutus in the true sense of the word, the inspiration was unmistakably there, influencing a generation to embrace the beauty of tutus in every form!

### My Own Tutu-ful Day!

And to think, on July 25th, 1961, I would’ve been all about the bold fashion. Imagine this: I would be twirling around in a gorgeous pastel pink mini-skirt, pairing it with a stylish white Peter Pan collar top, a super fluffy tutu, of course, all accessorized with oversized sunglasses, and my trusty, ballet flat shoes! This would've been an ensemble to make my fellow ballerina friends and even the fashion queens swoon!

After a delicious afternoon tea, it would've been off to the local theatre for an incredible ballet show - a timeless tale like "Giselle." You can just imagine me waltzing in with a delicate tulle tutu fluttering in the theatre air, and catching the eyes of some charming, young men in the audience. And after a captivating performance? Well, there’s no better way to celebrate the brilliance of ballet than with a post-show trip to my favorite boutique for a little tutu-inspired shopping spree!

Don’t forget, my dears, the magic of fashion and dance are forever interwoven. The tutus of the swinging 60s were more than just dance wear. They were expressions of style, freedom, and a desire for change. I, for one, love seeing the tutus take on a life outside the theatre, because for me, that’s where they truly become a symbol of empowerment!

So next time you spot a tutu fluttering in the breeze, remember the glamorous history of these lovely garments. Embrace their joy, their sparkle, and above all, their incredible ability to make us feel fantastic. Remember, you’re never too old, too young, too cool or too anything for a fabulous tutu. So, go forth, my darlings, and embrace the fabulous world of pink, tulle, and all things tutu!
