#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 7th November 1961 - Post Number 6776
Hello darlings!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another #TutuTuesday and a trip back through time! I'm Emma, your resident tutu enthusiast, and I'm positively thrilled to be waltzing back to the fabulous world of ballet fashion. This week, we're hopping aboard the time-traveling express train, and chugging straight back to 7th November, 1961!
A Trip Back To The 60s
Now, you might be thinking, “1961, Emma? That's way before my time, what's so exciting about tutus then?” Oh my dears, you just have to hold on tight for a truly magnificent journey. The world was changing in the 60s. New styles and trends were blooming all over, but you wouldn’t know it just by looking at the ballet stage!
Now, don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a boring era for tutus at all. In fact, the classical ballerina's tutu remained a timeless silhouette. We had long, billowing, traditional tutus (just the ones we adore now) paired with tight bodices - think the beautiful designs worn by Margot Fonteyn, the queen of the stage, for example.
Tutu Shopping Adventures
Of course, as your own personal fashionista, I had to venture out to a fabulous Parisian department store for a bit of window shopping! Imagine being swept away by a wonderland of colours, patterns, and intricate embroidery! It's a true delight just browsing through these beauties, even without getting to pick them up!
Now, let's get specific. I had to have a peek at the ‘tutu fabrics’ themselves. Just like today, nylon and tulle were all the rage in 1961! You can just imagine how the tutus rustled on the stage - an absolutely delightful sound to my ears! They were all about flow and fluidity, designed to complement those elegant, classic moves we all know and love.
Oh! The 1961 Fashion
While ballet costumes had a bit of a time capsule look, 1961 outside of the dance studios was buzzing! The iconic “New Look” fashion was still making waves. Think full skirts, nipped-in waists, and lots of delightful embellishments. What's even better? Many designs borrowed from the world of ballet! This just shows how captivating and timeless a good tutu can be! A girl can dream, couldn't she?
My Favourite Ballerina - A Ballet Story for Everyone
Oh! But before I forget, I just had to share a little story from the wonderful world of 1961 ballet. Svetlana Varlamiva debuted with The Bolshoi - imagine, dancing with the Bolshoi in that year, just as glamorous as a shimmering tutu! Just picture her onstage with those legendary costumes. Her grace and passion would've taken your breath away! That's why the ballerina deserves all the appreciation in the world!
A Tutu To Share!
So, here we are! This little journey into the wonderful world of tutu fashion has reminded me that time may pass, but the sheer magic of a well-designed tutu never fades. Even the smallest ballerina at the start of her journey to ballet dancing, dreams of that graceful twirling on the stage, wearing one of these beauties!
Now, I have a little question for you. Is there a ballet from the past you think is particularly fabulous and deserves to be revisited? I'm all ears for your favourite tutu moments, darlings! Leave me a comment on Pink-Tutu.com and we can continue to talk about it.
Until next time, keep those tutu dreams spinning!
Lots of Love, Emma xx
P.S. Did you know on the 7th of November in 1961, a man called Roger Maris hit the final home run to tie the Major League Baseball record for the most home runs in a season - a truly fantastic feat!
