#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - January 30th, 1962 - Post 6788

Hiya my darlings! It’s me, Emma, your very own Pink Tutu time traveller and, as always, it’s #TutuTuesday! This week I've whizzed back to a very glamorous time indeed – January 30th, 1962! Oh my, can you imagine – it’s the era of sleek hairstyles, big skirts, and, of course, absolutely gorgeous ballet costumes! I felt absolutely chuffed to be right here in New York City, the hub of all things fashionable!

You know me, my dears, I simply adore the history of tutus – the way they have changed over the years is quite magical! It's like a little ballet time capsule, giving us a peek into how fashion has shifted. Now, imagine all the excitement and romance that was happening in the ballet world on this very day in 1962.

The Big Event:

Today we had a treat at the New York City Ballet! I found myself sitting mesmerised watching “Agon” a wonderful and absolutely chic ballet that was first presented here back in 1957. The story of this ballet - and this might seem a little unusual, my dears - it's more about abstract movements and ideas, than a full blown fairytale plot. There are no "damsels in distress" or "handsome princes", it’s just wonderful choreography - it almost tells the story with just dance moves! Can you imagine! And, get this - it is designed by the absolute fashion legend that is Pablo Picasso, so of course it was beautiful!

1962: A Ballet-ific Year for New York

My dears, what I’m loving most about being in the ballet scene in New York in 1962 is that they are right in the midst of a ballet boom – they’ve just had a huge increase in funding! That means more amazing performances and - drumroll - new tutus! I heard whisperings of spectacular new designs that are set to hit the stage this year! You can imagine how thrilled I am - New York City has always had an incredible history with ballet, and this year it is really shining through.

Now, back to tutus! Imagine tutus created by legendary designers – and, the dancers in this era are the real fashion icons! You know I just had to find a place to see some tutus of this time - and lucky me! I happened upon a little boutique hidden away in the theatre district.

It had all kinds of incredible creations! From soft tulle skirts with beautiful flowing ruffles to delicate pointes shoes – they’re just the perfect tutus to twirl in, and to imagine being a ballerina during the glorious age of ballets like “Agon”.

What’s a Girl Gotta Do?

Naturally, being the girly-girl time traveler that I am, I was tempted to scoop up every tutu in the store – oh, but alas! I've had to be a bit of a responsible traveler today. As much as I love tutus, I also need to keep my focus!

Here are my thoughts from today - 1962 has a really special ballet energy going on – it's like everyone is caught up in the excitement of seeing such beautiful designs and wonderful performances. There's a lot to love about this era - from the dancing to the style of the costumes! I could have happily stayed for days - perhaps I’ll make it back again later.

As I step back into the 21st century and my little pink tutu, I can't help but feel a little bit sad to leave this magical world behind! I miss the graceful dancers and their exquisite tutus. But I also can't wait for next Tuesday! Because, I know that then I can share some even more exciting #TutuTuesday memories with you, all while making sure the world keeps twirling with my favorite accessory, the Pink Tutu!
