#TutuTuesday: A Pink Whirl Back to February 20th, 1962! 🩰💖

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your very own pink tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you away to another fabulous Tuesday in ballet history! Today, we're travelling to February 20th, 1962, a date that is jam-packed with delightful ballet happenings and oh-so-chic fashion trends. Grab your tea, your favourite ballet shoes, and settle in!

It’s my mission to show the world that the only thing better than a pink tutu is even MORE pink tutus. This is post number 6791 on my www.pink-tutu.com website – it’s taken quite a few jumps through time, but I think it's making a real difference, one fabulous tutu at a time!

I love the thrill of arriving at a different time period by train – there’s just something magical about the journey itself, and you never quite know what style discoveries you’ll stumble upon when you get to your destination! But for today, our destination is New York City, a ballet haven!

New York, 1962: imagine the glittering lights, the chic cafes, and the most exciting fashion – just picture it! It was truly the age of elegance and innovation!

Now, if you’ve already followed my travels through the glorious history of the tutu, you know just how essential it’s been in ballet since its arrival. From its roots in 19th century Russia to the beautiful evolution that followed, the tutu has remained a symbol of grace and artistic beauty. And guess what, 1962 was a great year to see a tutu show.

On this date in 1962, you’d have been able to catch “The Nutcracker” performed by the New York City Ballet, at the famous New York State Theatre – it's an absolute gem of the ballet repertoire! We always feel the magic of the story of the Christmas tree, the Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy in this enchanting classic – what's not to love about this one? If you find yourself back in time on a Tuesday (especially February 20th), be sure to grab tickets for “The Nutcracker”, it’s worth it, believe me!

Let’s take a peek at the ballet fashion trends of 1962. We’re talking sharp, modern lines, and luxurious fabrics, a perfect blend of elegance and whimsy – exactly the kind of inspiration that makes me swoon!

I bet the fashion scene was truly enchanting in New York back then! I always loved vintage shops when I used to live in Derbyshire – so I can just imagine the excitement I’d feel shopping for vintage clothes in 1962 New York. Oh, how I'd love to spend the day visiting boutiques!

For all you fashion-loving ballet enthusiasts out there, 1962 was a delightful mix of modern lines, full skirts and even touches of boho style. It wasn't unusual to find fabulous hats and headbands on the heads of fashionable women – how fabulous is that! Think long, flowing hair for those romantic ballets, like Giselle, and sleek, styled hairstyles for more dramatic ones, such as La Sylphide.

Imagine how a perfectly-placed pink tutu would make an impact! Oh, imagine how beautiful a vintage fashion shoot in 1962 with a tutu would have been. It truly is an item of pure, beautiful femininity, a symbol of a love of life!

As I wander through the stylish streets of 1962, it feels so right! The sights and sounds are full of beauty and life. If there's one thing that brings a touch of magic to every place I go, it’s definitely that sense of discovery – from the grand ballrooms and charming cafes, to the bustling streets. Everywhere you go in a different time you always seem to discover a new piece of art! The beauty that lies within each period makes me so excited to see what each time will hold for me!

And just as the curtain comes down on my exciting ballet adventure in 1962, it's time for me to bid you all a warm farewell for now! It’s been a truly magical #TutuTuesday this week – the spirit of dance and fashion truly vibrated throughout our journey to this enchanting year in ballet history.

As I step back onto the train and bid adieu to 1962, I’m already eagerly anticipating the next amazing date in ballet history I get to discover. Stay tuned, darlings, for my next time-traveling tutu adventures on www.pink-tutu.com every Tuesday!

Don’t forget to keep on rocking those tutus and sharing your own ballet stories with me, and join in my campaign: Let’s get everyone wearing a pink tutu!

With all my love and ballet glitter, Emma x
