#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through the Past!
#6803
Greetings, fellow twirling enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your pink tutu-clad guide to all things fabulous in the world of ballet. 🩰 Welcome to another dazzling #TutuTuesday journey, where we delve into the enchanting history of our beloved tutus.
Today, we're time-travelling back to 15th May 1962. Can you imagine, dear readers, a time before we were graced with the delightful, twirling delight of tutus? ( shudder ) Well, as a dedicated devotee of all things tutus, I'm determined to fill in the gaps in your history lessons!
It was the time of Marilyn Monroe's iconic performance in Something's Got to Give, where the shimmer of the big screen reflected a changing fashion landscape. Imagine the buzz, the excitement!
Of course, 1962 saw tutus dancing centre stage across the globe. We see Margot Fonteyn, a ballerina whose talent and grace could launch a thousand ships (okay, perhaps just a hundred tutus!) at the height of her career.
I’m whisked off on the 2.30pm express to London this week to see The Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake, where I can marvel at the exquisite black tutus, as they spin, shimmer and glide on the stage, it’s truly breathtaking. (My favourite tutus of course, are pink ones) I cannot wait to slip into my little pink tutu and embrace the beauty of the performance! (A delicious ballet breakfast beforehand will set me in the right mood!).
Now let's get back to 1962. It’s fascinating how the tutu has developed over the centuries! Just look at those iconic Swan Lake tutus in 1962, made with intricate layers of tulle! It's the epitome of classical ballet, darling, absolutely perfect for those ethereal movements. The tulle, the precision, it’s pure art!
In 1962, I imagine tutus were much like today: elegant, whimsical, a timeless beauty. There’s an allure about those early tutus – the graceful tulle, the craftsmanship! They’re a delicate echo of the past, telling stories of artistry, beauty and the timeless power of ballet!
But enough about 1962, let's delve into some tutu trivia! Did you know…
1962 saw the launch of Vogue Italia - a fashion powerhouse dedicated to the elegant world of fashion! I simply cannot imagine a fashion magazine without tutus gracing the pages!
Fashion in 1962, darling, was simply fabulously fun, vibrant, and oh-so-feminine! It’s a delight, a vintage feast for the senses!
Speaking of vintage... My time-travelling wardrobe is always overflowing with exciting finds, tutus from every era, it's the best treasure hunt! Recently I unearthed a delightful pink tutu from the 1950s, so I'm sure it was quite fashionable in 1962! I'm definitely bringing it on my journey today for a photo shoot at the ballet.
What better way to encapsulate the sheer loveliness of tutus than to step out in them, wear them with pride, and let their history twirl around you? Do you think everyone should wear a tutu every day? Do let me know in the comments.
Until next time, fellow tutu-lovers,
Stay glamorous,
Emma xx
