#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1962-09-11

Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here with a new post for your Tuesday read on www.pink-tutu.com. Welcome to #TutuTuesday, where we journey back in time, tracing the delightful story of the ballet tutu and discovering its place in dance history. This week, we're waltzing through September 11th, 1962, a day overflowing with cultural happenings!

This Tuesday was all about the exciting buzz of performance, both on stage and in the bustling heart of New York City. I decided to travel through time to experience it firsthand, arriving in the city that never sleeps, in the ultimate tutu-tastic way, of course! After all, there’s no better way to transport yourself to a bygone era than in a floaty, tulle-licious pink tutu. I must say, it really gets you noticed, especially amongst the chic fashions of 1962.

This fabulous trip required me to gather a few important items for the trip: a stylish beret and matching gloves for a chic retro look (thank you vintage shops!), a beautiful silk scarf (my favourite thing about vintage fashion!), and of course, the pinkest pinkest, most fluffy, most fabulous tutu ever made. With this ensemble I’d be a ballerina in the streets! I even found an original 'Vogue' magazine in a dusty antique store that included an article on ‘the perfect ballerina’ that described the fashion in more detail and some lovely, vintage pictures for my Tutu Inspiration board. I had a quick lesson with a professional ballerina for this specific era – to nail the moves. That helped me look the part, I wasn’t doing actual performance of course.

This period had so many different and intriguing dance styles emerging - it really made my head spin. As I twirled through the vibrant city, a mix of jazzy, expressive styles combined with more classical, graceful routines were swirling in the air! This was definitely a time for those experimental moves and dazzling techniques that make ballet so incredibly beautiful. I was on a mission to check out all the hot dance locations of the 60s and, I gotta tell you, I just couldn’t believe how diverse the world of dance was, and continues to be, because it still lives in the city. The city pulsates with dance today as it did back then. I also popped into a lovely shop on 5th avenue, because a shopping spree always adds extra glitter to the #TutuTuesday celebrations, especially if it’s all about fabulous clothes for ballerinas to wear on and off stage!

It was on September 11th, 1962 that the magnificent New York City Ballet presented a special programme that included the world premiere of the iconic Balanchine masterpiece, Agon. I remember my heart just soared, watching this contemporary work as I sat in the stalls at Lincoln Center! And, to my delight, Agon incorporated stunning minimalist costumes and even showcased innovative pointe shoes. Talk about trendsetting! It wasn't only the choreography but also the ballet itself that captivated everyone. This production, featuring breathtaking ballets, truly encapsulated the excitement of New York and captured the pulse of dance, as it was known back then. The city itself has so many amazing dance studios - my time there would definitely make any tutu-wearing girl feel totally inspired.

But that's not all! I'm delighted to announce my plans for #TutuTuesday 6821 next week! It will take you to the very centre of a most dramatic moment in ballet history - the premiere of the controversial ballet "Rite of Spring" . You can only imagine how big and controversial a premiere of this magnitude was, and that's all coming to www.pink-tutu.com next week! It was an event that would reshape the face of ballet - definitely a very special, tutu-ful day to revisit!

And just a reminder to all my fabulous readers - if you've enjoyed this week's #TutuTuesday post and would like to add some pink tutu sparkle to your wardrobe, feel free to hop on over to our website, www.pink-tutu.com - you can find the prettiest pink tutus in every style for every occasion.
