#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through 1963 - And That Dazzling "Giselle" Premiere!
Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! Welcome back to #TutuTuesday, your weekly dose of all things fluffy and fabulous. Itās Emma here, your pink tutu-clad time traveller, and this week Iām waltzing back to February 26th, 1963.
Oh, it's a rather magical day this week, because on this very day 60 years ago, a certain "Giselle" ballet, performed by the legendary Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, premiered at the Royal Opera House! Imagine, watching these iconic dancers glide across the stage - itās enough to make any tutu-clad heart flutter.
Now, to put things in perspective, in the early 1960s, ballet was really starting to become the darling of the London stage. I mean, imagine my joy to discover that the year 1963 saw the opening of the London Festival Ballet, and oh, they were just bursting with beautiful tutus and dreamy dance routines. This wasnāt your everyday affair, darling, this was high society in action. Fancy dress was the de rigeur at every single opening night!
Before my grand waltz through this week in history, I have to confess, I had a most delightful journey getting to 1963! You see, my time-travelling method involves a charming combination of steam trains and a sprinkle of glitter, courtesy of my ballet performances (and the fact I still canāt seem to find a decent pink-tutu time machine... maybe one day!) I mean, the train journey was simply exquisite - itās not every day you find yourself travelling with a carriage full of impeccably dressed ladies all on their way to the ballet! Talk about finding kindred spirits.
And the real star of this trip? The fashions, of course! It was a delightful mix of 50s sophistication and a hint of 60s swing. The ladies looked divine in their A-line dresses and bouffant hairdos, all ready for a night of elegance and artistry. Now, my darling tutu lovers, if you think that those ladies looked great, just wait until you get a peek at what I was wearing. Think fluffy, baby pink, and oh, so perfectly matched with the delicate lace gloves I had carefully picked out at a delightful little antique shop in Derbyshire before setting off. It's amazing what a splash of pink can do!
Back to 1963, and that magnificent ballet. Honestly, Fonteyn and Nureyev dancing the āGiselleā is a spectacle for the ages, a true testament to the timeless power of dance. Their moves were absolutely mesmerising. They were the epitome of grace and artistry, swirling and twirling like butterflies in a sunbeam. They had the entire theatre enthralled with each pirouette and jetĆ© - even I had to suppress a little gasp at their leaps. It really felt like watching a love story unfold on stage, and let me tell you, the tutu action in āGiselleā is phenomenal. Every detail, from the delicate white skirt that danced so gracefully around Fonteyn, to the flowing elegance of Nureyev's costumes, had me in a trance. Honestly, it made me wish that I could hop up on that stage and join them. Maybe one day, perhaps on #TutuTuesday.
Now, just picture this: the Royal Opera House, bathed in a soft light, the air filled with the delicate fragrance of perfume and anticipation. The chatter of the audience, a symphony of whispers, murmurs, and the occasional excited gasp as Fonteyn or Nureyev executed a particularly dazzling move, all mingling with the sweet music of the orchestra. It was truly magical, my friends. I almost wished I could bring a piece of that magic back home with me, but I had a train to catch back to my own time, you know? Time travel can be tiring sometimes, but never mind, it's all worth it for the thrill of experiencing something so spectacular as "Giselle" and that special historical connection!
And the truly magnificent thing about āGiselleā and its time? Even with all its technical prowess, this ballet isn't just about intricate steps. There's heart and soul to it. We feel Giselle's passion for the charming Albrecht. You can sense the tragedy, the love, the sadness ā it's a ballet that grabs hold of you and sweeps you into its whirlwind story.
That night in the theatre, surrounded by all those elegant people dressed to the nines, I was absolutely glowing. My pink tutu was absolutely perfect, twirling with the very essence of the dance, of love, and of a truly remarkable night in 1963!
Before you all go skipping off to your ballet classes, donāt forget to check out my new tutu creations on my online store ā my "Giselle" inspired pink tutu collection is a tribute to that extraordinary night and the magic of the stage. Stay fabulous, Emma xxx
