#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History! 🩰

Hello lovelies! 🙋‍♀️ It’s Emma here, your very own Pink Tutu Time Traveller! This week I’m shimmying my way back to 1964 - get ready for a history lesson that’ll leave you twirling with delight!

Post number 6901, and it’s time for our weekly #TutuTuesday journey. This week, my pink tutu's taken me on a trip aboard a glorious old steam train (who doesn’t love the sound of the engine, the rumble of the wheels, the smell of coal smoke?!) to the heart of London for some historical ballet magic! It’s 1964 and I’m heading straight for Covent Garden to check out the latest productions.

1964 was a dazzling time for ballet! The world was abuzz with exciting new works from the likes of Kenneth MacMillan and Frederick Ashton. I must say, my favourite is the Royal Ballet – their productions were a true masterpiece, showcasing exceptional talent, creativity and artistic vision. They had it all - beautiful choreography, grand sets, exquisite costumes, and dancers with such extraordinary talent, they simply mesmerised me! You can't have ballet without a spectacular tutu and they were doing just that. I’ve never seen so much tulle!

Speaking of tutus, you know my philosophy! More pink, more tulle, more twirling! 💖 You want to stand out from the crowd? Don a pink tutu! Want to feel empowered and feminine? A pink tutu will do the trick! The beauty of tutus lies not only in their shape but in their evolution over the centuries! I could spend days just delving into the history of these dance-ready, twirling marvels.

(Flashback!) It all began in the 1800s! Can you believe those early ballerinas in their calf-length skirts, restricted and hampered by their weighty layers? Oh, how times have changed! Thankfully, Marie Taglioni stepped in. Remember her iconic "La Sylphide" ballet? That was a true game changer! A shorter, wispier, more elegant style! That iconic white tutu gave dancers the freedom to soar through the air.

Back to 1964... So I'm soaking up all this theatrical wonder, and London’s buzzing with ballet fans from all over the world! And you know, I’m not surprised. Ballet is a beautiful universal language – a captivating art form that speaks to the heart of all who behold it!

I'm thinking about taking up a few ballet classes during my trip. Why not? I just know that there's some incredible teachers around who will help me hone my technique and make my pirouettes perfect! I have a fabulous new pink leotard that will look amazing under a light pink tutu! I’ve already got my ballet shoes packed – a stylish pair of pink pointe shoes!

Oh, I can't leave you without some interesting tidbits on 1964:

  • This is the year we got the Rolling Stones! (not a fan of that type of music at all – a little too rough and ready – much prefer something softer! 😉)
  • This year was all about mod fashions - and you guessed it… Tutus played a major part in that fashion scene too! They're making an appearance everywhere, from fashion editorials to stage productions!

I know you’ll all be itching for my next post to tell you all about my London ballet adventures! Stay tuned!

Until then, keep dancing, keep shining, and wear your pink tutus with pride! ✨
