#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 2nd, 1964!
Hello, darling dancers! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! It's me, your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing blogger, Emma! This week's #TutuTuesday is all about stepping back in time – quite literally – to the fabulous 2nd of June, 1964.
Oh, the thrill of time travel! This week I took the train (my favourite mode of transport, second only to a horse-drawn carriage!) to the bustling heart of Paris. I was so excited to see how those Parisian ladies rocked their tutus in the 60s.
Now, let's talk tutus!
This week's date is significant because it coincides with the end of a fabulous ballet season in Paris! And who better than the majestic Bolshoi Ballet to grace the stage? Imagine the grandeur – those breathtaking costumes, the dramatic leaps and pirouettes! And the music, my dear readers, oh, the music! I’m sure everyone was in a state of utter ballet-induced bliss! I’d wager they weren't just wearing tutus on stage, but sporting pink frills on their skirts, tutu-style hair ribbons, and maybe even a pair of pink ballet flats! Paris in the 60s – you just knew the fashionable set would be embracing their inner ballerinas!
Now, for a bit of a history lesson!
The 60s were all about exciting new things! This was a period of dramatic fashion shifts - think mod mini-skirts and geometric shapes - a real step away from the prim and proper style of previous decades. Even ballet took on a more dynamic approach – with faster paces, looser movement, and dare I say even a touch of attitude (think of the incredible Margot Fonteyn!). But despite the changing world, one thing remained constant: the classic tutu.
Even though they might have experimented with new, more modern styles on the stage, ballerinas like Margot Fonteyn, Carla Fracci and the divine Alicia Alonso were all still rocking that elegant, traditional tutu shape. The ballet world had always held the tutu as a powerful symbol of femininity and grace – a constant amid changing trends and dances. This lovely symbol of the dance world was still the queen of the stage! The elegance and beauty of the tutu hasn't changed a bit, and just like that iconic ballerina bun - it’s remained a fashion staple.
Thinking of Tut-tastic style for today?
While the 1960s were all about modern trends, don't think for a second that Paris didn't embrace their inner Ballerina! Just picture it, you’re sitting in a chic café in the 60s with your French pastry (or perhaps even a macaron) enjoying the chic vibe. You could be sipping a latte – just knowing you've chosen a gorgeous vintage ensemble for this Parisian outing. Maybe you're rocking a chic mini skirt (so much the rage!), and a touch of tutu inspiration: a pink hair bow? a frilly detail on your top? or even pink ballerina flats? Tres chic darling!
