Tutu Tuesday #6920: A Whirl Through 1964!

Hello darlings! Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you away to the world of ballet history! This Tuesday, I've hopped onto the rails of time and landed smack-dab in the middle of August 11th, 1964. Oh, what a fabulous era!

My, oh my, what a fabulous trip! I feel like a Victorian-era damsel dipped in pink glitter, swirling through the London streets on this glorious August day. Today's adventures have taken me to Covent Garden – it's simply brimming with glamour! Can you believe it, darlings? Today, the world’s most famous ballet company, The Royal Ballet, took to the stage in their sparkling splendour, with Giselle gracing the boards! Imagine! I'm positively dizzy with excitement.

Before we take a peek at today's ballet scene, let's discuss something fabulous, something that has been sweeping through the world of dance – the tutu, darlings!

Oh, tutus! So exquisite, so airy, so… pink!

In 1964, tutus were still the height of ballet fashion. This wasn't just some wispy, casual piece of clothing, my dears. This was haute couture, and a ballet tutu wasn't complete without that touch of elegant pink! Today, tutus were becoming a touch more moderne in their styles – think those stunning multi-layered skirts, reaching almost to the ankles – a stark contrast to the stiff, classic romantic styles from the 19th century. The dancers seemed to float across the stage, the tutu dancing almost as much as they did! But remember, we all need a bit of romance in our lives, don't we, my dears? That classic "classical" tutu wasn't going anywhere. Think billowing, flowing layers of white or pale pink tulle – absolute dreamy perfection, wouldn't you say?

Back in 1964, tutus weren't just for ballet! Those magnificent pieces were a key part of fashion and design – think The Sound of Music, for example! They weren’t simply a stage garment, darling, they were an aspirational look – like a glimpse into a world of grace and elegance!

Today, with this timeless dance unfolding before my eyes, I’m absolutely smitten. But the excitement isn’t over!

Now, who is ready for a spot of shopping? Moi, definitely! The department stores are simply overflowing with fabulous attire for all things dance. After a bit of browsing, I just had to get myself a gorgeous, silky, powder-pink dress – just the perfect shade, darling!

And for my tea at Fortnum & Mason (I couldn’t resist a pot of Earl Grey and a slice of Victoria sponge – oh, how divine!) - well, it simply had to be a beautiful, flowing pink silk scarf. Think: the perfect outfit for a picnic in Hyde Park with my friends, darling. I feel quite positively fabulous, don't you?

Speaking of tea and fashionable delights, a little peek into what's trending in the world beyond the dance floor:

  • Mary Quant's mini skirt – darling! A revolution in women's fashion, a whirlwind of style and independence, I just had to have one for myself, naturally.

  • The Beatlemania explosion - who can resist the power of this groovy band? My toes are just itching for a jitterbug session!

  • Twiggy, the face of fashion! She's making the London fashion scene so very exciting, just like our own ballerina style!

But for now, it's time for me to hop back on that time machine, and share a bit more of the fabulous history of this fabulous garment we love!

Stay tuned for my next #TutuTuesday post – we’ll be whisking away to another magical place, another time, another piece of history – I’ll be bringing you along on the adventure, of course! In the meantime, remember to always embrace your inner ballerina.

You are stunning, you are unique, you are fabulously fabulous – go on, embrace your love for all things pink and pretty!

Until next week, darlings,

Emma x
