#TutuTuesday: A Blast from the Past, Darling!
Hello my sweet tutu-loving friends! It's Emma here, and it's time for another journey through history with my #TutuTuesday post, taking us back to 25th August 1964. This week, I’m putting on my travelling tutu and catching the train (I’m a big fan of the romance of train travel, it just adds a touch of chic, don't you think?) for a whirl through time.
I can’t deny it, travelling in time is quite the privilege. But just think how much fabulousness you miss out on by not giving it a go! A little sprinkle of pixie dust and voila – suddenly, you're swirling through a century-old ballroom or waltzing with the ghosts of fashion greats like Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli! Of course, I keep it all secret – a little fashionable adventure between me and my dear readers. Don't worry, I always ensure I'm performing a few ballets to earn enough to fund my travels - the more performances, the more glamorous adventures I get to have!
The Tutu’s Story: 1964Ah, 1964. A glorious time of mini skirts and groovy tunes! Think of the legendary dance numbers – “I Feel Good” by James Brown! And remember that wonderful Beatles' record “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” oh it just made me want to twirl with my toes en pointe! 1964 was such a wonderfully lively time for music, and of course, the world of ballet wasn't left behind!
This is the year that one of my most treasured ballet moments happened – Rudolf Nureyev joined the Royal Ballet! Can you imagine the excitement? Now, a little insider tidbit for all my tutu-savvy lovelies: rumour has it that even the Royal Ballet didn’t have all the pink tutus they needed to show off his artistry properly! That just goes to show you, dear reader, there's never enough pink!
And just a little side note on that pink! Isn't it wonderful that it’s now embraced for all ages, and in all sorts of places? You know what I'd say, if I was on the board at a prestigious ballet school? Pink tutus for everyone! I think the world needs more pink tutus in all of its glory. (A touch of silver for added pizazz, of course).
Tutu TravelsAnd let’s get back to this day in history! Now, just imagine yourself in 1964, twirling around in a fabulous tutu (remember, pink, darling, is always best!) to the rhythm of "A Hard Day's Night," or maybe the catchy “Walk On By” by Dionne Warwick. Don't forget to twirl as though every step could be the final pose!
The year 1964 saw an uptick in the number of ballet schools across the UK, each hoping to be the new “The Royal Ballet,” perhaps you can imagine my excitement with the chance to see those! And the big fashion magazines, like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, were starting to highlight the world of dance.
And this year marks an iconic dance number, the one that every tutu lover still remembers today! Oh, “The Dying Swan,” I've had the privilege of seeing this performed in numerous eras, each rendition different yet breathtaking. Just pure ballerina magic!
And here we are at the end of our fabulous journey back in time! The wonderful thing about fashion is how timeless it is. Every year, each generation puts its own twist on style, but in the end, a pretty pink tutu with its delicate layers and delightful tulle, will always be, dare I say, "oh-so-very-chic.”
I love getting your feedback, so don’t be shy and drop a comment in the space below. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Now off to do some shopping - gotta stay on top of all those latest trends. And for those who can't wait to see the next #TutuTuesday blog, just head over to my website, www.pink-tutu.com, - where a tutu awaits you!
Until then, keep twirling!
