#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 6940 - 29th December, 1964!
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday delve into the glorious history of ballet tutus! My, oh my, has it been a week already? I've been busy! This time, let me tell you, the trip has been fabulous - a little whirl around New York City, to be precise. Oh, the places I've seen, the outfits I've admired, and the amazing dancers I've had the privilege of watching!
This Tuesday, we're travelling back to December 29th, 1964 - and I must tell you, my lovelies, the tutus in this era were quite simply sensational! We’re entering the peak of what we could call "Romantic" tutus - airy, wispy and utterly beautiful. You know the kind - those breathtaking, voluminous tutus that make you want to swirl around and let the layers flow like clouds. The ballerinas in those days had such exquisite style! Imagine graceful, wispy skirts made of layers and layers of tulle, so light and airy it looks like a feather caught on the wind!
This era saw the tutus evolving beyond just the romantic look - a blend of romantic grace and athleticism started to emerge. You see, the dancers weren't just pretty faces swirling on stage anymore, they were strong, powerful, incredible athletes, showcasing strength and grace in equal measure! And their tutus became an important part of their athletic performance.
Just imagine those amazing leaps, pirouettes and delicate pointes being performed in these gloriously soft tutus. These ballerinas truly mastered the art of making even the most challenging steps look effortlessly beautiful!
And, of course, the iconic pale pink hue that reigns supreme in my own personal fashion kingdom - oh how the tutu designers in this era embraced it! We saw it everywhere - from delicate shades of pastel pink to richer, deeper shades of fuchsia.
Now, talking of iconic colour palettes - a highlight of my recent New York City trip was seeing a fabulous collection at The Museum of the City of New York. Imagine, darlings, all sorts of costumes and outfits on display - the kind you dream of owning - it was pure joy! I did manage to snap a few photos on my secret time-travelling smartphone, of course, so look out for them in my upcoming fashion posts on www.pink-tutu.com !
As for 29th December 1964, it wasn’t all tutu wonder in the Big Apple. While some of you might have been settling in for some cosy festive cheer after Christmas, in the world of dance, New York’s Lincoln Center was ablaze with a performance by the famous American Ballet Theatre. The date marked the end of a fabulous run of 'Swan Lake’ - a ballet classic for those unfamiliar. A perfect choice to usher in the new year, I'd say!
This journey is making me yearn for a graceful pirouette and some graceful leaping. Thankfully, a new class at my local ballet studio begins tomorrow!
Don't forget to keep an eye out for a fabulous outfit update on www.pink-tutu.com next week - I've got some beautiful new finds from the New York fashion scene.
Remember, darling, keep twirling, keep shining, and always keep your pink tutu close to your heart! See you next Tuesday!
Much love, Emma

P.S. Did you see my new tote bag? It says 'Tutus are the new black' on it - a bit of a slogan for our beloved ballet attire! It was a complete bargain from a little shop in New York. And you won't believe how I got here… a journey on a magical, silver bullet train - but that's another story for another #TutuTuesday!
