#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 1965-02-09 š©°š
Welcome back to my blog, dears! I'm Emma, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and it's #TutuTuesday, so grab a cuppa and join me for a journey through time, back to the glorious 1960s! Today, we're going to dive into the wonderful world of ballet tutus and explore how they were gracing the stages back in 1965-02-09. This is post number 6946 on my blog www.pink-tutu.com, where we celebrate all things tutu, every single Tuesday. š

Let me tell you, 1965 was an exciting time for tutus! They were absolutely bursting with colour and shape. We were saying goodbye to the strict lines and styles of the past and moving into a bolder, more expressive era for ballet.
Now, imagine this... weāre in New York City, where tutus are a favourite of the crowds. We're on our way to the Metropolitan Opera for a dazzling performance. The city is buzzing with the sounds of street performers and taxi horns. It's exciting, it's thrilling, itās simply magical. The energy, it just electrifies you, and the best part? The stunning tutus! They were definitely statements. Imagine fluffy, dreamy white tutus twirling to the most glorious melodies, showcasing intricate, exquisite detail. It truly was a glorious sight!
Of course, the style back then wasnāt all fluffy. It was the beginning of an exploration of shape and form. Think geometric designs, daring new colours, and playful patterns. And speaking of coloursā¦ think vivid pinks, daring yellows, vibrant blues. Imagine a swirling sea of colour!
The tutus back in 1965 werenāt just about being seen, they were also about storytelling. Just think, Rudolf Nureyev gracing the stage in āSwan Lakeā, every move he makes tells a story in every movement. The dramatic, elegant lines of the tutus allowed his genius to simply shine! The dancers seemed to become the tutus and the tutus seemed to become part of the dancers. It was magic!
(Do you remember Rudolf? He was a dashing man who completely redefined our perception of tutus, inspiring both dancers and fashion designers, itās no wonder we still adore his talent even now.)
While we were wowing audiences on Broadway and in opera houses, the streets were coming alive too. London, Paris, Romeā¦ itās no surprise that the beauty of the tutu is captivating fashion designers and every day ladies alike!
What did we love in 1965?
Firstly, the tutus with all those fabulous layers! We were taking all the fabulous frothy fabrics we could get our hands on and whipping up voluminous skirts! It was all about movement and graceful motion, capturing the heart of the city. Think a big, beautiful poof, perfectly designed to show off every pirouette!
The shape of the tutus was also a statement. Imagine a-line skirts gracefully flaring out at the hip. This silhouette perfectly reflected the energy of the times! You just couldnāt keep it under wraps, these fabulous pieces just wanted to be free to move!
Now, letās talk about a really big change from past yearsā¦ Colour. In 1965, colours were as varied as the energy of the streets! You can imagine a rainbow of colors, all the bright reds, electric yellows, dazzling greens and beautiful blues were swirling around! Itās an explosion of creativity and beauty, not unlike my pink tutu you can see in the photos. But then again, pink is always a big favourite! š
Now, my dear friends, how are we to capture this extravaganza of tutu-licious moments? I would encourage everyone to head to a show! The dance of the tutus in a beautiful stage performance, simply magical. And, darlings, please don't forget to share your favourite #TutuTuesday memories with me in the comments below!
This week, I travelled by train from Derbyshire, England to the glittering city of London. I had an amazing time and visited some of the best fashion houses in London! The atmosphere is buzzing!
Don't forget, this is just a little taste of 1965, a truly magical era. If you love the look of the past but want a modern touch for your tutu, how about a fun printed pattern, or even some glitter! The possibilities are limitless when it comes to your tutu, so have some fun with it! Remember, it's all about expression! And that brings me to my most favourite topicā¦. SHOPPING!
Thereās nothing I love more than scouring a market for a beautiful new tutu to show off! Remember, you don't need to be a professional dancer to rock a fabulous tutu. The best part? The beauty of the tutu is that itās all about having fun and enjoying the journey. Itās just simply a timeless piece! It doesn't matter where you are, be it London, Paris, New York or Tokyo, or even right there at home, remember to rock it with confidence and a big, beautiful smile! š
Before we leave, don't forget my big aim in life: I'd love everyone to wear a pink tutu one day! Just imagine, the world wearing pink tutusā¦ how fun would that be? If you feel inspired to embrace the #TutuLife and buy a pink tutu, be sure to share a pic with me, and feel free to share your love for all things tutu in the comments below! I love hearing from all of you lovely people. š
Till next #TutuTuesday, be bold, be bright, and keep twirling! āØš
Yours always,
Emma
