#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1965-04-20 - A Vintage Tutu Treat!
Hello my darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! It’s me, your favourite pink-clad time travelling ballerina, Emma, and guess what? It’s #TutuTuesday again! How exciting!
This week we're waltzing our way back to April 20th, 1965, to have a look at the marvellous world of tutus. My oh my, I'm positively giddy to take you on this delightful journey! Remember, if you want to read my previous blog post, it’s number 6956 and you can find it on Pink-Tutu.com.
Time Travelling to the 1960s
This week I hopped on a magnificent train, it was the very one they use to take us on holiday to seaside destinations, the kind of holiday where we take along all our bathing costumes, to 1965. Did you know that 1965 was an amazing year for the world of dance? The London Ballet was all the rage - now, they’re called The Royal Ballet, oh so grand, you know? - and the Royal Opera House was brimming with talented ballerinas. You couldn't ask for more elegance, darling.
I even managed to get tickets for a spectacular production of 'Giselle'. Oh, it was glorious. Seeing that flowing white tulle as it drifted over the stage was simply enchanting! It reminded me, of course, of a ballerina's most treasured costume - the tutu! And there’s no time quite like 1965 to talk about the wonderful world of tutus.
The Evolution of the Tutu: From Romantic to Contemporary
It’s fascinating to see how the tutu has evolved throughout history. We've come a long way since those first, rather stiff Romantic period tutus. Remember those were all about being long, flowing, and quite honestly, impractical for leaps and turns!
But now in 1965 we see the tutus changing in the world of dance. Now we’re starting to see the rise of the ‘classical tutu’ with the bouffant and dramatic form we are used to today. Those beautifully tiered tutus were all about creating that lovely graceful and graceful silhouette that only a tutu can deliver.
More is More! A Love Affair with the Bouffant
And it's not just about practicality, darling. It's also about drama and style. 1965 was a period that embraced the theatrical, just like a tutu is all about. In that year, I'm sure they’d be as ecstatic about a lovely billowing tutu as I am.
Do you remember the legendary 'Swan Lake'? Think about how magical it is to watch the ballerina spin, surrounded by layers of shimmering white. Isn’t that just absolutely spellbinding, darling?
I've found a wonderful image from a vintage fashion magazine featuring the famous Natalia Makarova wearing a lovely full-bodied tutu in 'Giselle', and I have to share it with you - don't you just love it? She’s dancing the first act, and the skirt’s beautifully billowing out and swirling. The way she moves the tulle to match every movement? You just can't help but be completely mesmerized.
A Look at Tutu Fashion
And if there was ever a year that gave us permission to be as flamboyant as we wanted to be, 1965 was the year for it! Did you know they were calling pink a bright and beautiful colour in fashion magazines back then, but guess what? I already knew that! But in the fashion of tutus they favoured those very strong black, white, pink and the gorgeous blue tones. But what could possibly look more magical than pink, darling? It’s just so perfect, don’t you think?
The Importance of Comfort
Oh darling, you've heard me mention before how crucial it is for a ballerina to feel good in her tutu. It has to be the most elegant thing imaginable while also making it so comfortable and effortless that they move through it like a fish in water, darling. And they certainly were able to find lovely comfort in a well crafted tutu in 1965. Just think about how wonderful it would be for those ballerinas to pirouette all those hours with the soft caress of tulle touching their legs! And when you see them float across the stage, darling, you know they've found the perfect blend of fashion and practicality, don't you?
