#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: November 23rd, 1965 - A Whirlwind of Colour! 🩰💖
Hello darling darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, ready to take you on another spin through the history of our beloved tutus. It's #TutuTuesday, number 6987 to be precise, and I've just arrived back from a fabulous trip to the Paris Opera House in 1965! Can you imagine?
Now, I know what you're thinking - what a fantastic date for a little ballet exploration, right? 1965 was all about daring styles, playful fashion, and, most importantly for us tutu lovers, a resurgence in colourful, flamboyant costumes! Imagine bright reds, bold greens, sunshine yellows, and, of course, my personal favourite, a beautiful swirl of pink. 💖
The 1960s – A Tutu Revolution?
The 1960s saw a dramatic change in how we viewed tutus. You see, ballet in the early 1900s was all about elegance and tradition, think shimmering white tutus, graceful moves, and strict posture. Now, 1965 was all about expressing your inner creative spirit, and the ballet world wasn't shy to follow suit.
You wouldn't believe the outfits! Think of a dazzling mix of daringly short tutus, bold pops of colour, and shimmering materials. The lines between tradition and expression became blurred as choreographers embraced innovative movements, bold stories, and - drum roll please! - sparkly tutus! Imagine swirling, colourful layers, cascading like rainbows across the stage.
Paris - Fashion at its Finnest!
And where better to explore this bold and vibrant world than the Paris Opera House! Paris in the mid-60s was like stepping into a technicolour dream - the clothes, the fashion shows, the restaurants, even the shops felt like a scene from a film. This energy pulsated right into the ballet scene!
I saw the most exquisite performances – it was like dancing rainbows were swirling around the stage. Just picture it, my dears: graceful dancers wearing bright pink tutus, gliding through the air like butterflies, all against the backdrop of a shimmering city skyline!
From Classic to Contemporary
You might wonder why this change in tutus came about in the '60s. It was an exciting time of change and social movements, just like today! Think about the world at that time - there was a new energy, a newfound expression of personal freedom. And this freedom found its way onto the stage in the form of colour, playful moves, and a break from the strict rules of traditional ballet.
Remember my loves, ballet wasn't all about perfection back then – it was about exploring and pushing the boundaries. We can learn a lot from that! Today, it's the same! It's okay to experiment, play around with different styles, and find what works for you. I always say - it's time for us to embrace a world of colourful, playful, fun, and most importantly - pink tutus!
What about Today?
Of course, today's tutus are just as stunning! I see dancers swirling through the air, wearing a multitude of colours and textures. Imagine bold stripes, swirling sequins, and playful layers that defy gravity!
The best part? You don't have to be a professional dancer to enjoy the joy of a tutu! We all have our own way of expressing our inner ballerina. It's time to dust off that old tutu from the back of the wardrobe and unleash your inner dancing diva!
*Today’s Ballet Must See? *
Speaking of today’s exciting dance world, why not head down to see the Royal Ballet's Giselle performance on the 23rd? A stunning ballet based on a German Romantic folktale and it’s going to be on stage at the Royal Opera House in London. It’s about a young country girl, Giselle, who’s heart is stolen by a nobleman in disguise - how very romantic! But when his true identity is revealed, tragedy unfolds. I’m off there to take some inspiration for my new ballet travel blog post so I'll be sure to share some snippets on my next TutuTuesday!
Now, my loves, don't forget to wear your pinkest, most fabulous tutus this week! Head out to the park, take a spin around your living room, or simply rock that fabulous tutu to a concert. Whatever your way of embracing tutu love, just have fun!
*Stay sparkly and twirl-tastic, *
Emma xoxo 💖
