Tutu Tuesday: 21st December 1965 - A Festive Flounce! 🩰🎄

Hello my darling dears! Emma here, back with another installment of your favourite #TutuTuesday blog - your weekly dose of ballet tutu history! Today's date is a real cracker - 21st December, 1965! That's just a few days before Christmas - perfect timing for a little festive flounce!

As you all know, I simply adore travelling through time in my gorgeous pink tutu - and believe me, when I tell you, 1965 was a real treat for a tutu lover like me! Think swirling skirts, bold colours, and some truly spectacular dance moves. Let's dive in, shall we?

So, imagine this: it's a crisp December morning in London, England. A city teeming with anticipation for Christmas, all beautifully decked out in tinsel, lights and wreaths. I, your intrepid time-travelling ballerina, am at Covent Garden - the epicentre of ballet in the UK. It's a hub of activity, a flurry of dancers, choreographers, and patrons all excitedly buzzing with Christmas cheer.

And why am I here? You see, on this very day, a truly remarkable ballet performance takes place - The Nutcracker. This Christmas classic, first staged in 1892, was now a beloved tradition, bringing joy and enchantment to audiences of all ages.

Now, just picture those tutus, my dears! So many layers of tulle, flowing effortlessly like snow falling gently on a wintry day. Each dancer, adorned in their own dazzling creation, danced like snowflakes in a whirlwind. Imagine the colours – jewel tones like emerald and ruby, shimmering golds, and of course, a splash of festive red. Just like Christmas itself, each tutu was a gift to behold!

Speaking of gifts, after witnessing the magnificent Nutcracker performance, I ventured into Covent Garden Market. Imagine my delight when I discovered a little vintage clothing shop tucked away on one of the side alleys. Inside, I was in heaven! Such beautiful pieces! Now, I must confess, this particular trip wasn’t about scoring the perfect vintage tutu for my collection. This time, I was in the mood for some delightful accessories – you know, to jazz up my outfits and make my daily pink tutu a bit more festive!

I found myself captivated by an exquisite hand-knitted cardigan – a vibrant, crimson masterpiece. And, what really caught my eye? A vintage broach! This dazzling piece was made from silver, intricately detailed with tiny red jewels – just perfect for my pink tutu, wouldn't you agree?

And speaking of Christmas and tutus, what’s Christmas without a Christmas tree, right? But guess what! The concept of ballet dancers dressing up as Christmas trees was all the rage in the mid 1960s! In 1964, the New York City Ballet even showcased the delightful, The Christmas Tree – a playful ballet for a total of nine dancers! It was just too cute! Imagine these fluffy, tulles resembling a beautiful green Christmas tree, adorning the stage and creating a spectacle for the eyes!

The Christmas spirit was truly palpable, my loves!

As the day drew to a close, I found myself immersed in the bustling festive atmosphere of Covent Garden Market. This was a place brimming with excitement, the anticipation for the arrival of Christmas just about bursting out of every storefront. The aroma of mince pies filled the air, and the cheerful Christmas tunes spilled out onto the streets from the local shops. Just magical!

Remember my darling dears, the beauty of the tutu transcends time and trends. The graceful flounces, the captivating silhouettes, and the enchanting movement of the dancer – they never cease to inspire and delight!

So, grab your tutu (and perhaps a festive Christmas broach!) and let’s celebrate the wonderful world of ballet tutus together! Until next time, keep spreading the joy and the pinkness! 💕

Your tutu-loving time-traveller,

Emma
