#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - January 25th, 1966 (Post #6996)

Hello, my lovelies!

Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where we delve into the enchanting world of tutus, all things pink, and the most magical art form there is – ballet! Today is Tuesday, so you know what that means… cue dramatic music and shimmering lights …it's #TutuTuesday!

Today, I'm travelling back in time to the glorious 25th of January, 1966. Oh, darling, what a year that was! I just adore the fashion from this period, don't you? So much bold, vibrant colour, and a real focus on youthful energy and fun. And tutus? They were everywhere! It was a truly dazzling time to be a ballerina!

So, grab your tea, darlings, and let's slip on our finest pink tutus and take a journey to the enchanting world of 1966. I know what you're thinking: you want to know about the tutus! And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Tutus of the Time

First, let's talk fabrics. While classic tulle tutus, that airy, romantic cloud of tulle, were definitely a mainstay, 1966 was a bit of a playground for new materials and styles. Can you believe it? Nylon was making a splash, creating lighter, more flexible, and absolutely gorgeous tutus for dancers! And with it, the opportunity for stunningly creative designs! I was lucky enough to see a breathtaking production of Giselle at Covent Garden that year where the corps de ballet had the most breathtaking tutus, made from a combination of tulle and nylon, and finished with delicate sequins.

This was also a time for a resurgence of experimentation in tutu length. We weren't stuck with just the traditional, floor-length tutus. You see, those tutus were so chic in their grandeur, but we, darling, are all about practicality here. Sometimes you need a little more freedom to move! Midi tutus - falling to mid-calf, short, cheeky tutus for the dancers showing off their legs, and even some daring above-the-knee tutus, perfect for those big leaps and energetic turns – all had their place on the stage! I swear, watching the ballerinas pirouette and grand jeté in these exciting new tutu designs was truly magic.

Beyond the Stage

It wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a little fashion fun now would it? You might think a tutu was reserved for the theatre, but oh, darlings, I beg to differ. 1966 saw a big revival of the tutu in everyday life. It was a powerful symbol of youthful spirit and optimism, something the fashion world definitely picked up on.

Think about it: this was the era of mod fashion – bold colours, mini-skirts, and a lot of attitude. The tutu, with its beautiful fluidity and whimsical charm, fit right in with this vibrant and forward-thinking fashion scene! A daring mini-tutu paired with knee-high boots and a fitted top? Absolutely sensational! A longer, romantic tulle tutu for a whimsical dinner party? Perfectly chic!

And speaking of fashion, darlings, did I tell you about my fantastic adventure to Paris last month? Oh, it was truly divine! I had the most wonderful time exploring the fashion scene, visiting the Galeries Lafayette, which was practically overflowing with the most amazing outfits! The window displays were all about sleek and bold colours – it felt like every colour of the rainbow was waiting for me! Of course, my shopping bags were absolutely overflowing with lovely pieces. Let’s just say I am still sorting out my purchases! It is always a glorious treat to indulge my love for the latest designs. And you know what really surprised me? Even in the depths of that dazzling world of high fashion, pink tutus were having a moment. Honestly, the Parisian girls know how to rock a tutu like nobody else. So chic and so confident. And did I mention the incredible bakeries?! Oh, the pastry shops in Paris – the best macarons I’ve ever had!

Looking Back

And here we are, back in the present! It was so much fun stepping back in time and remembering the incredible world of tutus in 1966! As always, darlings, I encourage you to experiment, express yourself through the magical world of the tutu.

Who knows, maybe someday, we'll all be wearing our pink tutus out and about – let's keep our eyes on the future! Remember, a tutu isn’t just a costume, it’s a celebration of femininity, creativity, and boundless energy.

And what were you all up to on January 25th, 1966? Leave your thoughts below! Let’s spread some tutu love!

With love and twirls,

Emma
