#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1966-03-29 (Post #7005)
Hello my gorgeous Tutu Twirlers! Emma here, reporting live fromā¦ well, I canāt tell you exactly where because, well, you know the time travelling rules! š Letās just say Iām in a very ballet-centric city and itās 1966. Can you believe itās March already? The clocks are changing soon and Iām already dreaming of pretty summer outfits and long sunny evenings at the balletā¦ Speaking of ballet, did you know that todayās date marks an absolutely monumental moment in Tutu History? And it has everything to do with the glorious, frilly tutu.
Oh, you love tutus as much as I do? Then you need to follow my #TutuTuesday blog each week here on www.pink-tutu.com - youāll never miss out on some amazing ballet-related info, a glimpse into the amazing world of ballet across the ages andā¦ you know, just lots of gorgeous tutu inspiration! š©°š
From āCrinolinesā toā¦ the āTutuā
Okay, so back to the momentous occasion in ballet tutu history! 1966, March the 29th - itās the very same day that the Royal Ballet graced the world stage with a groundbreaking production of "Giselle". You see, this was no ordinary āGiselleā. This one featured some radical changes to the costumes ā changes which are still rippling across ballet fashion to this very day!
The Modern Tutu
So, how did the costumes in this particular āGiselleā change everything? Itās all about the tutus. You know, those gloriously billowing, delicate wisps of tulle that make ballerinas look so etherealā¦ Well, in this production, the Royal Ballet redesigned them completely. Gone were the heavy, Victorian crinolines with layers upon layers of bulky fabric - tutus like these looked grand but didnāt exactly allow the dancers to dance easily. Imagine dancing on stage weighed down by all that fabric! š²
Instead, the new tutus featured much lighter, shorter skirts that flowed effortlessly. This was absolutely revolutionary for ballet. Think about it - with less fabric and weight, the dancers could execute incredible movements, spin like tops, and express themselves completely through dance! This was truly a game-changer - all because of these magical tutus!
My Own Modern Tutu Love
Personally? Well, my favourite tutu is definitely a shorter, light one. I absolutely adore those airy, delicate tulle designs and, darling, they make you feel like you can fly! I recently discovered a brilliant vintage shop in London - it was simply packed with the most amazing vintage tutus in every shade imaginable, and just the most incredible textiles! It was a complete wonderland!
I grabbed the most gorgeous powder pink tulle tutu, and, I'm going to tell you now, I felt utterly transformed when I wore it. I had to snap a couple of photos, of course! š¤« It felt incredibly liberating, and just completely and utterly pinkā¦ Itās important to own one of these lovely tutus - so if you see oneā¦ you must treat yourself, dear! š
And More Tutus?
Here's the extra fun partā¦ This is only the beginning of our #TutuTuesday tale! Becauseā¦ wouldnāt you believe it - this production wasnāt just about changing the look of the tutuā¦ it completely changed ballet fashion! As more and more companies began to embrace this new look, the āmodernā tutu style was quickly adopted by many, leading to a major movement in dance and design!
I am dying to visit a theatre production right now, especially in the era we are currently experiencing, 1966. But to do so would be very expensive for the budget, as would this very exciting looking production... so itās off to explore some more amazing ballet stories to inspire the next #TutuTuesday! You never know where we might find our next inspirationā¦ perhaps in Paris? That sounds perfectā¦ and ohā¦ fancy restaurants, haute coutureā¦ Oh darling! ššš

With perfectly pressed velvet seats and gleaming silver silverwareā¦ And did you see the incredible ballerinas that were boarding? Oh, they look absolutely breathtaking in their tutus and their glamorous 1966 costumes. I must grab a quick cup of tea! āļø See you soonā¦ and happy tutuing! šš
