#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1966-08-09 (Post 7024!)

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, ready to whisk you back through time to a magical world of tutus!

As you know, every Tuesday we journey through ballet history, exploring the evolution of the glorious tutu from its humble beginnings to the fabulous frocks we adore today! So, grab your tea and a slice of Victoria sponge, and settle in for a delightful journey back to 1966-08-09, a date brimming with dance delights.

London, Oh London!

Oh, London, you magnificent metropolis! It's no surprise I've landed here, a hub for theatre, ballet, and a thriving fashion scene! Today, London’s the heart of ballet, with the Royal Ballet reigning supreme at the Royal Opera House. It's the stuff of dreams!

This particular day, the 9th of August, holds a special place in ballet history – but before we dive into that, let’s take a moment to soak in the stylish scene. The sixties are all about chic sophistication. Think tailored shifts with contrasting coloured pockets, those stunning A-line dresses, and – gasp! – the ever-so-fabulous wide-leg trousers. What a delightful departure from those restrictive, poofy skirts of earlier decades! And the colours! Oh my, from bright bold blues and oranges to sophisticated olive greens, the sixties are a veritable rainbow of stylish delight!

And, of course, what’s a chic sixties look without the perfect finishing touch? A tutu, darling! Yes, a tutu! A touch of graceful whimsy is still in style. They're still typically made of tulle, yes, but this decade's bringing a whole new flavour of tulle with shorter, fluffier styles! Just imagine them swirling with every twirl!

A Royal Ballet Premiere

Back to that special date, August 9th! The Royal Ballet, my dear lovelies, are showcasing the exquisite "La Sylphide", one of my absolute favourite ballets! Imagine, a magical fairy tale in which a charming Scottish peasant falls head-over-heels for a whimsical Sylph.

It's a true delight! A true love story about human desires, the ethereal beauty of nature, and yes, of course, some breathtaking, graceful dancing. The whole evening, the exquisite sets, the intricate choreography – oh, I’m just swept away with it all! And don't get me started on the costumes! Oh, the tutus are a true work of art – delicate, soft, with wispy, gossamer tulle. You’ve never seen such artistry, and let’s not forget the stunning ballet slippers – a timeless beauty, as ever.

I've even noticed a hint of those fabulous colours I adore - emerald green and crimson red. Oh, the way they contrast against the traditional, soft-hued pale pink, cream and beige that grace the Royal Opera House, simply sublime. It's all truly mesmerising, making every ballerina on the stage a beautiful vision of grace!

A Ballet-tastic World!

And it’s not just in London that the world is smitten with ballet. The magic is spreading. As I’ve been travelling, it's like everyone is falling in love with the delicate grace and intricate steps. Even if we’re not twirling on stage, that delicate tutu style is capturing hearts everywhere.

Across the continent, we see that ballet’s inspiring a new kind of fashion - the sort that makes my heart skip a beat! I’ve seen exquisite tutus styled in shops, on ladies at the races, even spotted the delicate grace of the ballerina-inspired silhouette making its mark on evening dresses. What a wonderful time to be a tutu lover!
