Tutu Tuesday: A Glimpse into Ballet History, 1967 - Post Number 7069
Bonjour, my lovely tutudlings!
It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another exciting delve into the wonderful world of ballet history! Today we're hopping on a train (with my perfectly packed travel bag overflowing with pretty things - of course!), heading back in time to June 20th, 1967, and a special date in ballet history.
Before we set off, I just need to quickly remind you to check out my beautiful new collection of pink tutus, all made with the softest tulle and the most delicate embroidery. They're simply divine! Find them all at my www.pink-tutu.com website, and don't forget to use the code "TUTUDREAM" at checkout for a special discount!
Now, back to our time travel! The year is 1967 and the air is electric with excitement! The world is dancing to the sounds of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and the fashion world is going wild with mini-skirts and go-go boots. Oh, to have been a young lady in this era!
But as always, in this journey back in time, it’s ballet that calls to us, drawing us to the graceful elegance and powerful stories that are always the heartbeat of this wonderful art form. Today, we're focusing on the stage itself, where the Royal Ballet is performing The Sleeping Beauty at London's Royal Opera House! This timeless ballet, full of swirling romance and fantastical magic, is a classic of the genre, still dazzling audiences around the world today.
Can you imagine, a magnificent auditorium filled with beautiful gowns and glamorous men in top hats? All eyes on the stage as the graceful dancers perform stories of love and sacrifice. A truly magical spectacle! It’s a date I wish I could have experienced first-hand.
Now, as we wander back to the present, a little fashion trivia for you lovely ladies! Remember those exquisite costumes that our ballet dancers wear on stage? The delicate, billowing tutus that have captured our hearts? Well, did you know that the tutus we know and love didn't actually come into their own until the late nineteenth century?
Before then, dancers had more form-fitting costumes – often described as “panniers” or “bustles.” It wasn’t until Marius Petipa, the legendary choreographer of many famous ballets, including Swan Lake, that the puffy, multi-layered, tulle design of today became the staple of the ballet world.
Just imagine trying to perform complex pirouettes in those stiff panniers! I shudder to think of it. Luckily, thanks to Petipa’s innovations, we have those beautiful tutus that allow our dancers to glide across the stage with such graceful beauty!
But, here's a little fashion secret, my darlings! It's not all about those fluffy stage tutus! In 1967, fashion designers began creating exciting, "street-style" tutus – think chic, flirty, and incredibly fun to wear! Imagine - tutus not just for the stage, but for daily life! It's a concept I embrace wholeheartedly, of course! I even encourage all of you to wear tutus everyday, not just for ballet class but on your commutes, to dinner, to the movies - even to your favourite cafes! Just imagine how much joy and whimsical beauty a tutu could bring to an ordinary day!
I truly believe that everyone deserves a pink tutu - it’s an absolute must-have for any wardrobe! Tutus have a unique way of bringing joy, elegance, and a touch of whimsy to every occasion, and I just know that 1967 would have been the perfect time to bring the tutudling magic into daily fashion!
But alas, it's time for me to say au revoir. I have a ballet performance to catch – I must get myself ready to grace the stage in my own signature pink tutu!
And you know what, darling tutudlings? You're invited! Join me at the theater this weekend, as we step into the magical world of ballet together. Let's celebrate all things tulle, pink, and graceful. And if you spot a lovely pink tutu at the show, you might just find that it belongs to me!
Until next Tuesday, stay radiant and tutudlingly happy,
Emma x
