Tutu Tuesday: A 1967 Glimpse into the World of Tutu! (Post #7081)
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back for another Tutu Tuesday from the pages of your favourite tutu-loving, time-travelling, pink-obsessed blog. This week, we're waltzing back to a special date - 12th September 1967!
Now, as a Derbyshire lass, I'm a true lover of all things dainty and feminine. And what screams elegance and femininity more than a twirling tutu? That's why, whenever I can, I travel through time with my trusty suitcase overflowing with pink tutus. Just imagine my excitement when I arrived in 1967 and was welcomed by the swinging sixties, the vibrant fashions, and - most importantly - a society brimming with a love for the ballet!
Just like me, the ladies of 1967 embraced the enchanting world of tutus. They adorned their boudoirs with shimmering photographs of dancers in billowing, ethereal tulle creations. Shops boasted colourful ballet-inspired clothing with swirly patterns and graceful lines, perfectly capturing the graceful essence of dance.
And as I sashayed down the bustling streets of London - travelling, of course, on a grand vintage train in the most darling frock with matching ballet shoes - I saw the beautiful silhouettes of the era in full bloom. The ladies wore short skirts that skimmed their legs, revealing a touch of knee - such a glamorous yet modest display! The colours? Vibrant shades like lime green and a symphony of pinks were all the rage. These pops of colour against the muted backdrop of the day provided a dazzling burst of energy. It was a perfect backdrop for the blossoming popularity of ballet - the movement, the grace, the captivating beauty - resonated with the spirit of the time.
What's on the menu for today?
Speaking of a captivating performance, the 12th of September, 1967, was a memorable date indeed! Imagine my glee as I slipped into my most delicate pink tutu, all lace and frills, and scurried to the Royal Opera House, my heart palpitating with excitement.
This evening, I had the absolute pleasure of witnessing the premiere of “The Royal Ballet: La Bayadère,” with none other than the celebrated Rudolf Nureyev himself. Now, this performance is truly the stuff of legend, you know? Imagine - this extraordinary dancer with his captivating moves, his effortless grace - I was in a trance for the entire duration of the performance! I practically pirouetted myself out of my seat with joy! It was like being caught in a breathtaking whirlwind of movement, colour, and pure artistry!
And it's not just about the performance itself. As I meandered through the streets, soaking up the energy of this glorious city, I witnessed how much ballet impacted fashion, the way people looked, the energy of the era. Imagine! People wanting to dress like dancers! It filled my heart with such joy and hope.
I'm not just telling you about a performance, dear reader. I'm weaving you a story - a tale of creativity, grace, and artistry! It's a tale about how ballet resonated with the hearts of the 1960s. I've truly embraced the 60s!
The '60s were all about finding a new expression of femininity, a break from the rigidity of the past. I was enthralled by their freedom, the acceptance of new and exciting trends, a new expression of style. Ballet, with its inherent femininity and elegance, served as the perfect conduit for that.
So, what did 1967 have to offer in terms of tutuland?
Well, I simply had to visit Harrods! My! Imagine that store - a cornucopia of fashion, filled with elegant displays, with ladies browsing the latest couture, showcasing the most incredible, elegant, graceful ballet-inspired dresses! I was truly overwhelmed! From elegant tulle gowns in shades of lavender and rose to chic little dance-inspired numbers, there was something for every budding ballerina. The tutus themselves! A veritable array of shimmering tulle, satin, and silk, with layers and layers of intricate embellishment. Even the designs - such intricate patterns - reminiscent of ballet steps! The stores were truly filled with dreams of the dance!
There's so much to explore from the wonderful world of 1967's ballet. And you know me, dear readers - always an advocate for fashion and style - the ladies of that time truly embraced ballet’s elegant artistry! So why not channel that era yourself? Pull on your favourite pink tutu (naturally) - perhaps paired with a stylishly mod dress or a charming, little '60s style skirt and have a little spin! I can't wait to see you all living your best Tutu Life.
Until next week, darling readers, stay sassy, and always embrace the joy of twirling!
Lots of love,
Emma x
