#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Blast from the Past! (Post 7101)
Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu-enthusiast and purveyor of all things pink! It's another fabulous #TutuTuesday and today, we're taking a little trip back in time. Buckle up, lovelies, because we're going to 1968!
Oh my goodness, imagine a world without TikTok and Instagram (shudder!), where the coolest thing was to get your hands on a pair of those trendy flares and go dancing at the local disco. 🕺💃
This week I hopped on the train and zipped over to London, specifically Covent Garden, which has always been the heart of the ballet world in the UK, a bit like a magnificent jewel sparkling amongst a maze of historical streets. Today, I was particularly drawn to the Royal Opera House – the mere sight of it sends a thrill through me, making me think of all the stories it's witnessed, all the legends it's held.
I felt such an urge to grab a tutu, throw myself in a whirl and start dancing! The history felt almost tangible - imagine those magnificent dancers gliding on the stage here in the 60s, their tutus whispering with every elegant movement. Imagine the gasps of awe, the clapping, the excitement…
And on this day in 1968, 30th January, well, let's just say I'd have been completely overwhelmed, for the most iconic event of the day took place right here at the Royal Opera House! The Royal Ballet was about to present a most unique ballet. Can you believe it, darlings? - It was ‘A Dance Suite’ featuring three short, beautifully diverse ballets all wrapped up in one glorious evening. These are some serious pieces, ones that stayed with people and inspired future generations! I could almost picture the swirling energy of these magnificent ballets in my mind’s eye, the ballet's spirit radiating, like tulle billowing in the wind! It’s all about the story - how the different dances play out, each a microcosm of its own narrative, telling stories of love, loss, joy, even sorrow, in every gesture and every pose!
And as I gazed up at the stately architecture of the Royal Opera House, I imagined the energy the ballet would unleash: all those shimmering fabrics swirling, all those emotions dancing before the audience!
Ah, tutus… the embodiment of pure grace, the magic of the dancer's dream. In 1968, they were still an absolute staple, the most essential part of every ballet's visual splendor. Every little girl longed to spin in one! (Just like I do!)
And you know, those tutus are more than just fabric; they're a story, a way of life, a glimpse into the heart of this enchanting world!
So here's a shout-out to all the ballerinas out there: may your steps always be light, your dreams grand, and your tutus, oh darling, simply exquisite!
See you next week with another blast from the past in the magical world of the tutu!
Love, Emma 💖
