#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 5th March 1968 - Post 7106

Bonjour mes chéries! Emma here, back again with another jaunt through time for our weekly #TutuTuesday! This week, my fabulous time-traveling tutu and I have whisked ourselves back to a most exciting moment in history - March 5th, 1968.

Today, we’re skipping straight into the heart of Paris, a city bursting with fashion, culture and, of course, ballet! The very air hums with the energy of the avant-garde and I can just imagine the whispers of silk and the elegant click of heels against cobblestone as Parisian women promenade along the Champs-Élysées, their skirts swirling like pink tutus in the wind!

1968 – Oh, what a year! It was the year that witnessed the May ’68 student uprising, an exciting era of rebellion and political change that was, surprisingly, fuelled by the creativity and defiance of youth culture! This vibrant energy is what brought me to this magnificent time, as it was the dawn of a new era for the ballet tutu.

Imagine this: Michel Fokine, a ballet genius who once reimagined the tutu in the early 20th century, is shaking his head in bewilderment at the sheer brilliance of Rudolf Nureyev’s dazzling portrayal of Romeo in Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ He's dancing in a tight-fitting, streamlined, sleek, black leotard! It’s a breath of fresh air, a defiance of the old, romantic and voluminous tutu!

Oh, my darlings! This is revolutionary! Imagine - no longer is the ballet dancer constricted by layers upon layers of tulle! She is finally able to move with freedom and fluidity The dancer, finally, becomes one with the dance. This is a true ballerina. The masculine energy of black, combined with the raw, visceral emotion of Nureyev’s dance, made this ballet an absolute masterpiece, captivating audiences worldwide.

But fret not, my dears! While classic romantic tutus remain timeless masterpieces in their own right, they certainly aren't disappearing. They are finding new life and exciting reimaginings, adapting to modern tastes, reflecting the boldness and daring of the times.

Imagine the thrill of witnessing a ballet performance at the Paris Opera Ballet on this date in 1968! The atmosphere, electric, as a beautiful prima ballerina adorned in a traditional white tutu pirouettes with ethereal grace while a* majestic swan-like* costume encases her graceful form. Oh, the magic!

You see, my darling friends, while ballet may have been graced by the avant-garde in 1968, we never truly abandoned the tradition. There will always be a special place for the classical tutu. For what better way to express the* romantic, timeless* charm of a* Swan Lake* than in a billowing, white, graceful masterpiece of a tutu, sweeping across the stage like a feathered dream?

Today, on this fabulous #TutuTuesday, we’ve taken a journey through time and discovered a vital shift in ballet costume history. The* sleek, black leotard* paved the way for an array of exciting possibilities.

What are we to learn from this? Why, simple!* The beauty of ballet is that it is eternally adaptable.* This constant evolution of style keeps this art form as exciting and relevant today as it was in the days of Carlotta Grisi, the first ballerina to wear a tutu.

And that's what I call Tutu Magic!

Until next Tuesday, stay pink and keep your twirls in check!

Much love,

Emma xoxo

P.S. Have I told you about my favorite dress? A magnificent pink taffeta gown adorned with a* shimmering pearl corsage. Oh, the elegance! I wore it to a gala performance at the *Covent Garden Opera House, where the most wonderful* pink velvet opera cloak* wrapped around my shoulders kept me warm as I stood outside the stage door meeting famous dancers! The air was thick with excitement.
