#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Through 1968! (Blog Post #7114)
Hiya lovelies! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! Itâs your favourite, pink-tutu-wearing time-traveler, Emma, here, ready to whisk you through another wonderful journey of ballet tutu history. Todayâs date, 30th April 1968, is a rather exciting one, as it was the day the Royal Ballet put on a special performance at Covent Garden â which, as any good ballet-loving lass knows, is practically hallowed ground!
And who do you think was starring in that show? The incredible, the phenomenal, the downright fabulous Margot Fonteyn! You know, just one of the greatest ballerinas ever! I bet you wouldnât have been able to resist wearing a fluffy pink tutu to that show, would you? Because darling, this was the time when tutus were just becoming SO much more than those rigid, uncomfortable things that ballerinas used to have to wear. This was the time of innovation and grace, the time when tutus began to float, and move, and truly express the beautiful story they were telling.
Just like my darling pink tutu, those gorgeous tutus of the 1960s had such a personality, you know? They were daring, they were dramatic, they had such life! Can you imagine? They had actual, real-life, flowing layers! A ballet loverâs dream! This wasnât the era of tight, restrictive bodices that practically strangled you - although darling, that definitely had its own glamour, too. But by the late '60s, the focus had shifted to how tutus flowed, how they reacted to every spin and jump, and letâs be honest, it just looked magnificent.
Before I go completely overboard about my love of tutus, letâs have a quick chat about this journey in time. This week, I came by train â because thereâs truly nothing like the romance of travelling to a show in a glorious train carriage, seeing the countryside whizz by! The wind in your hair, the anticipation building⌠it truly is something special. But before I set off, I naturally went shopping! Now, darling, if thereâs one thing the 1960s knew how to do, itâs a good time for clothes shopping!
Speaking of London in the 1960s, thereâs no doubt about it â everyone was crazy for this fab, bohemian, cool-yet-classic look. Remember Carnaby Street? It was the place to be, bursting with psychedelic prints, mod jackets, and yes, you guessed it - tutus! Tutus were suddenly on trend, a symbol of rebellion, of the joyous energy of the time. You could have rocked your pink tutu anywhere and no one would have batted an eyelid â thatâs the magic of the 60s, I tell you!
Imagine the scene. A young Londoner in a groovy pink mini dress and a vibrant blue headscarf, clutching a hot chocolate in one hand and a copy of âThe Beatlesâ Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in the other, suddenly sees a woman wearing a cloud of a pink tutu! There would be a beat, a pause, and then a chorus of admiration â âOoooh! You look absolutely smashing, darling!â I know I would, wouldnât you?
You can see the evolution in style throughout the decade â imagine those stiff tutus with the pointy shoes that youâd see in older pictures⌠by the late 60s, tutus were soft and dreamy! All about the delicate flow, just like my pink tutu.
Speaking of flow, the choreography! I was captivated by Margot Fonteyn in that performance. Imagine, she had this amazing energy and technique, but she made it look so effortless. Like she was gliding, not dancing! And it was the tutu that helped make it look so dreamy.
But remember darling, there's no magic formula for achieving the perfect look, it's all about the confidence you exude! There's no greater confidence than twirling in a fluffy pink tutu - trust me! It makes you feel utterly empowered, and that, ladies, is something special!
Now, onto my trip! The theatre was alive! It was brimming with vibrant personalities, a symphony of styles - bold colours, sharp cuts, daring textures! And amidst the exciting throng, my pink tutu didnât go unnoticed! I was bombarded with compliments - âLovely! So sassy!â, âIt looks absolutely beautiful!â, âWhere on earth did you find it, darling?!â It made my heart skip a beat. Every compliment I receive motivates me more to get everyone wearing their own amazing pink tutus!
Now, for the real question! Do you feel the excitement, my dears? Are you inspired to wear your own pink tutu? Itâs a truly life-affirming experience. You know what to do - head out there, and strut your stuff. Let your confidence shine through and, my dear, the rest will just fall into place!
Until next Tuesday, when Iâll be telling you all about another incredible moment in the history of ballet tutus! Stay gorgeous, lovelies, and always remember: never stop twirling!
