#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - February 4th, 1969! 💖🩰

Hello darlings, welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we celebrate the beauty and history of the ballet tutu! Today, we're taking a trip back in time, all the way to February 4th, 1969. It's like stepping into a time capsule filled with the spirit of the late 60s - imagine flares, tie-dye and some truly iconic dance performances!

For you see, my dears, even though I’m a time-traveling tutu enthusiast, my roots are firmly planted in the UK - a land of tea, biscuits and some of the most incredible ballet performances you'll ever witness. And you just know that, being a Derbyshire girl through and through, I'm particularly fond of the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden! And this date holds a very special significance for me…

"The Sleeping Beauty" Awakes Again!

…Because on this very day, The Royal Ballet performed Tchaikovsky’s timeless masterpiece "The Sleeping Beauty"! Can you even imagine the excitement buzzing through the air as the curtain rose on this spectacular production? And just picture the audience, dressed in their finest, gazing in awe at the ballerinas' breathtaking movements! (I bet those floral prints and daring colours were so inspiring). I could just picture myself swirling around in the heart of that enchanting ballet! It's enough to make a tutu-loving time-traveler like myself ache for the past!

The Magic of the "Romantic" Tutu

Now, of course, any discussion about ballet history, wouldn’t be complete without discussing the evolution of the tutu! I mean, there are those glorious layers of tulle, floating so delicately in the air…a truly graceful symphony in motion. On that day in 1969, the "romantic" tutu was at its height, and I think it just perfectly captured the air of elegant romance swirling around in the audience!

For those who aren't familiar, the "romantic" tutu, born in the mid 1800s, brought a whole new sense of ethereal beauty to ballet. We’re talking airy, graceful designs that allowed the dancers to take centre stage in a whirlwind of airy movement and stunning choreography. The ballet dancers looked absolutely heavenly! I think it’s safe to say that “The Sleeping Beauty” was one of the key moments that showcased the sheer beauty of these “romantic” tutus - and it sparked a trend that would dominate the ballet world for years to come!

If there was a way to get my hands on a time machine and an “Sleeping Beauty” inspired, “Romantic” tutu all in one day, I’d be hopping onto that journey like a shot! Just imagine: Dancing along with the iconic Royal Ballet. It would be glorious!

Ballet and Fashion: A Tale as Old as Time

I can’t talk about ballet history without mentioning fashion! From the majestic ballgowns in “Sleeping Beauty,” to the dazzling modern designs on show today, fashion plays a central role in every aspect of ballet - and not just on stage! Fashionistas of the 1960s knew exactly how to dress the part for a show like “Sleeping Beauty." The era embraced bold, bright colours, bold prints, and feminine shapes, a look that made it easy to embrace a sophisticated and elegant feel with a fun, playful twist! I mean, can you even imagine how incredible all the outfits must have looked under the dazzling theatre lights? The drama!

Of course, even then, as now, we wouldn't forget our “Tutu Tuesday” favourites – those classic designs that make me, and, frankly, everyone else, simply melt with their charm! In fact, let’s rewind for a second, right back to the roots of ballet: Imagine the days of courtly balls and the graceful elegance of tutus like the “Romantic” design, capturing all those delightful swirls and intricate details. You can't help but imagine the sparkle and charm they'd bring to the ballroom. And today, just as then, we find ourselves falling head over heels for those glorious silhouettes of timeless beauty!

Speaking of glamour, I have to say, it was truly the most stylish era. Let's go for a little wander down memory lane. We’ve already spoken about the breathtaking beauty of the "romantic" tutu, but I must add that the fashion on that day was equally dazzling! Picture sleek silhouettes, tailored skirts, crisp jackets, and the touch of vibrant prints - and all of this while still paying tribute to the era's love of feminine details. We were surrounded by fashion! And of course, the dresses were as dreamy as a day at the ballet - I mean, how could we not look our best when there's so much incredible fashion around?
