#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – Post 7204 - January 20, 1970
Hello darling Tutu lovers!
Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com for another edition of #TutuTuesday. I'm your favourite pink tutu wearing time traveller, Emma, back from another fabulously stylish jaunt through time! Today, my darling readers, I'm taking us all the way back to January 20, 1970 - a magical time in history where ballet tutus were becoming even more popular and beautiful.
And you know me - when there's beautiful fashion and wonderful stories, I'm always there, ready to take you on a whirl! This week, we'll be hopping on the train, catching a grand performance and then going shopping in Paris, darlings! Are you ready to see what those glamorous French dancers wore?
From Derbyshire to the Parisian StageThe January wind was nipping at my nose, but I didn't mind a bit as I climbed aboard the train in Derbyshire, clutching a gorgeous, hand-stitched, pink tutu under my arm. This week's performance is at the legendary Palais Garnier Opera House in Paris! Honestly, the grandeur of the train journey alone always adds a special touch to my trips. I imagine myself a little like the ballerina Giselle, with the train carrying me away to my fairy-tale adventures.
I do hope you can hear the clicking of my heeled shoes as I strut through the train carriages, making a show of the perfectly puffed up layers of tulle that adorn my exquisite pink tutu. It’s what the Parisians call "a sensation." After all, tutus and French glamour go hand in hand. And this week, well, my dears, I will show you why.
The 1970 Ballet Show – Where Classical and Modern MeetOh my dears, let me tell you – this week's performance was truly divine! At the Palais Garnier Opera House, it was a modern ballet featuring one of the biggest stars of the 20th Century – Rudolf Nureyev. My goodness, he is magnificent! The grace, the elegance, the athleticism! Just thinking about him makes my heart beat a little faster.
Speaking of hearts racing – let's talk about the tutus! Now, I am all for a beautiful traditional, full length tulle, classic ballet tutu. It just makes a ballerina so delicate and exquisite, floating across the stage like a cloud.
This particular ballet was all about showing a modern twist to those traditional silhouettes though! So think, shorter skirts, some beautifully constructed designs featuring a blend of textures and fabrics, and yes, you guessed it - those dazzling pinks and other beautiful bright colours! The dancers looked like whimsical, playful creatures – a touch of magic and an elegant modernity that perfectly matched the music and the performance.
Now, my dear readers, I know what you're thinking – 'Emma, tell me, did you buy any more tutus?' You know me too well! Well, the shopping was delightful. Think silk scarves, hand-stitched hats, perfectly tailored shoes – a real blend of Parisian chic and elegance! It’s enough to make even the most seasoned ballet fan faint! And of course, I did find the most beautiful tulle, for my own very special pink tutu collection!
Pink Tutus for Every OccasionSo now, dear friends, we know that tutus were looking their absolute best back in 1970. Whether it was for a grand performance at the opera or a delightful walk through the streets of Paris, the pink tutu was taking over!
And darling, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I know what you’re thinking, how could I be in Paris and not attend the biggest and best couture fashion shows?! The fashion houses were just about bursting with color, exquisite textures, and fabulous silhouettes! The very idea! It really was, in a word, breathtaking.
My personal favourite? Balmain. Imagine! The bold shapes, the vibrant colours, all with an edge and elegance that’s simply… divine! Oh darling, I think I may be getting a bit overexcited. Let me bring it back.
