TutuTuesday #7206: A Pink History Lesson!

Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers!

It's your favourite tutu-clad time traveller Emma, back again with another #TutuTuesday blog post!

This week, I'm taking us all the way back to February 3rd, 1970, to explore the history of the iconic tutu. And, to make it extra special, I'm rocking a magnificent hot pink tulle creation, because pink is always in fashion, right?

Now, while you might be tempted to think tutus are just a modern-day phenomenon, they have a long and glamorous history that stretches back to the early 1800s! I'm talking about the time of romantic ballet, the days of fluffy skirts and enchanting tales told through movement. Imagine – no high kicks or athletic leaps, but delicate footwork and elegant arm movements. So romantic, isn't it?

This February 3rd, 1970, the world was celebrating ballet in many ways. I was lucky enough to catch a performance at the magnificent Royal Opera House in London, and trust me, the tutus were absolutely breathtaking! It was a production of Swan Lake with some of the finest dancers of the day. The graceful movements, the story unfolding right before my eyes, and, of course, the stunning costumes - a dazzling array of white and black tutus, all flowing beautifully as the swans pirouetted and leapt.

Did you know the "romantic tutu," which debuted in 1832, revolutionised ballet? Unlike its earlier predecessors, it wasn't a stiff, restrictive garment. Imagine a graceful bell-shape, a skirt swirling and flowing, showcasing the dancer's movements in a whole new way! Talk about a game changer for ballerinas!

But the 1970s brought with them a shift, an exciting era for both dance and fashion! A more contemporary style emerged, favouring streamlined and sporty silhouettes. Ballet costumes took a step towards a more athletic feel, with some choreographers experimenting with more fitted leotards and leggings. You might even see dancers doing some thrilling acrobatics and contemporary movements! It was a period of artistic freedom!

Speaking of artistic freedom, why not let your own creativity flow? Put on your favourite pink tutu and embrace your inner ballerina, because honestly, a tutu isn’t just a costume; it’s a symbol of creativity, of freedom, of beauty, and yes, a whole lot of fun! You can be a dancer in the kitchen, in the park, or even at the local shop! No stage necessary, just pure fun!

And remember, folks, a tutu doesn’t discriminate – it’s a beautiful outfit for every age, size, and personality. And the more vibrant and colourful your tutu, the more magical your dance! Pink, red, blue, even a touch of green! Go wild and let your tutu express your unique style!

Of course, as any good ballet aficionado, I have to say that a classic pink tutu never goes out of style. It’s timeless! So, head out there and make some memories in a fabulous tutu, twirling your worries away!

I know, I know - what's the most exciting thing about time travelling? Getting to see how different generations dress! There is a magic in a shop window displaying beautiful, delicate garments! Speaking of shopping, I'll be visiting some wonderful shops and boutiques today, searching for some new additions to my pink tutu wardrobe! I absolutely adore the pretty details and textures of fine tulle, and I'm looking for some fabulous designs for the spring season.

I love a good vintage tutu – there's a timeless elegance about them! They whisper stories of legendary dancers and past eras, and remind me that the beauty of ballet transcends time. And I also love seeing the bold new designs being created, adding modern twists and vibrant colours. There are some brilliant designers out there who really capture the spirit of contemporary ballet and its bold, artistic approach.

Did you know: There’s a reason why we’re so obsessed with ballet and its elegant attire! I think it’s the idea of effortless beauty and graceful movement that captivates us all. Who doesn’t love a beautiful story told through movement?

If you want to travel the world, seeing gorgeous tutus and exquisite performances, don't forget, all those exciting ballet performances I do are how I pay for my adventures! The more I twirl and perform, the more I can explore this glorious world in my time machine. But what’s even more special is to share my passion with you. So go ahead, embrace the joy, wear your pink tutus proudly, and let’s spread the magic of dance to everyone, everywhere!

And remember, stay tuned next Tuesday for another fantastic tutu adventure! Until then, keep those skirts spinning and your spirits high!

Your favourite Tutu Twirler,

Emma 💖
