#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1971-03-16

Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com! It's me, your favourite tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, Emma, and this week we're taking a trip back in time, as always, to explore the glorious history of the tutu! As you all know, I absolutely adore my tutus - the floaty fabrics, the way they swirl, the absolute joy they bring! So, grab a cuppa, a slice of cake, and settle in for this week's #TutuTuesday, post number 7264, all about 16th March 1971, and the ever-changing world of the ballet tutu!

Now, I'm fresh off the train from a delightful little trip to Paris, darling! Just divine, everything is so chic! You just wouldn't believe the stunning new couture I spotted at a boutique on Avenue Montaigne, and I snagged myself the most fabulous new pair of ballet shoes in red satin - absolutely to die for! I do love the French, they're so romantic and know how to dress for a night at the theatre! And oh, the performances! The Palais Garnier, it's breathtaking, the gilded balconies, the opulent decoration. Pure magic! They really know how to treat their ballerinas over there, which is, after all, what really counts!

Now, back to our tutu journey. 16th March 1971, what a glorious time to be a ballet fan! This is a time when the world was truly starting to embrace the beauty and artistry of dance.

You wouldn't believe what's happening right now on this very day - "The Sleeping Beauty" is at the Royal Opera House in London! Isn't that simply divine?! The choreography, oh darling, it's a ballet classic, so graceful, and that iconic "Rose Adagio" - utterly enchanting! To see those tutus twirling onstage with such effortless beauty, well, it just sets my heart aflutter! I must try and grab a ticket, it’s worth every penny for a ballet aficionado like myself!

On the 16th of March, in New York, a young dancer called Martha Graham is presenting her "Appalachian Spring." You see, this date marks a really important transition point in ballet, where we were starting to move away from the classic tutus and see a new kind of contemporary dance, exploring raw emotions and modern movement. Graham, now considered one of the most iconic figures in the dance world, used less formal garments in her choreographies, like everyday clothing and longer skirts. So, a true rebellion against the tutu, some might say, but in reality, an evolution, as always, allowing ballerinas to express their creativity in new and exciting ways.

You know, I was just in Moscow last month, and there, they're doing some truly spectacular productions. The Bolshoi Theatre, simply breathtaking, such opulent and ornate sets, a perfect pairing with the classical tutu! And did you know, they even have their very own school of ballet, The Bolshoi Ballet Academy? They've got future ballerinas and dancers learning to perform, a legacy of ballet passed down through the generations! Truly, the Bolshoi has such an esteemed history and is revered across the globe. Their iconic classical tutus, oh darling, the sheer romanticism of them all! You just have to see them to truly appreciate the magic they bring to the stage.

And this brings me to an interesting point! We can see how tutus have changed so much, right? I just think that is fascinating! They went from the very early short, full skirts of the romantic period, right through to the classical, billowing tulle skirts, then into the more practical leotard style designs - there is just so much history woven into their evolution!

Now, I think this all really calls for a delicious slice of my grandmother's famous Victoria Sponge - oh, I love baking, it’s a little ritual for every tutu Tuesday! Do you know, sometimes, after a long day of ballet rehearsals or seeing a captivating performance, it's just wonderful to get home, bake a yummy cake and indulge in a little sartorial reflection! And you know what's just absolutely lovely about a big slice of Victoria sponge cake? It tastes just as delicious in a pink tutu as it does in my usual comfy wear. You see, with the right amount of attitude and some glorious accessories, a tutu can just as easily take you from the dance studio to a fancy luncheon to an evening gala, and back to your home where you can make a delicious sponge cake. You see, my philosophy is that a pink tutu, darling, can fit any occasion. It just depends on your attitude, your personal style, and the kind of magic you want to bring to the world!

I hope you've enjoyed this little #TutuTuesday trip through history, my dears! Until next week, I leave you with this: Don't ever be afraid to wear your tutu, darling, to a tea party, a meeting, or a dance recital! Life's too short to not enjoy the magic of a little bit of tulle.

Now, I'm off to enjoy a spot of afternoon tea in this pink tutu, complete with a flower corsage. What better way to embrace the springtime and this tutu history than a little dose of tea time fashion? I simply can’t get enough of the feminine and graceful details of life, even if they involve a little sprinkle of historical magic. Until next Tuesday!

All my love,

Emma
