#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1971-06-01 💖✨🩰
Hello, lovelies! Welcome back to Pink Tutu! It’s Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, and today is #TutuTuesday, so get ready to dive into some fabulous ballet history! 🎉
We're time travelling again, this time to the first of June, 1971. It's a Tuesday, naturally, so put on your best pink tutu, grab a cuppa, and settle in. This week we’re exploring the exciting world of tutus, right here in New York City! 🗽
Tutu Tales: 1971 - The Year of the Romantic Tutu
The year 1971 was a magical time for ballet. We were seeing an explosion of romantic, expressive dance, and of course, it wasn’t all just about the dancing, was it? It was about the tutus too, oh my goodness! The tutus were simply spectacular - picture delicate tulle, cascading down in a symphony of silk, layered for a beautiful, voluminous effect.
Think of the graceful curves and gentle swish as the ballerinas twirled, almost like flower petals dancing in a soft summer breeze! 🥰
This wasn’t your typical, super structured tutu either. There was an effortless, flowing grace, and these romantic tutus perfectly captured the spirit of the dances of the time, full of emotion and delicate artistry. ✨
You’ll be delighted to know that I even found a little vintage piece in the shop, a delightful antique romantic tutu, and I’ve been dancing the night away in it at all the shows! The way it feels like I’m actually part of the dance… it’s heavenly!
I even managed to find a beautiful vintage show poster in an antique shop. It features a striking picture of prima ballerina, the incredibly talented, Gelsey Kirkland! 🤩 What a dazzling sight it was! I felt all warm inside knowing how amazing the tutu would look swirling onstage.
I imagine I must look very fetching in my vintage pink tutu in my little corner of New York. I’ve had some lovely, enthusiastic folks in my local park tell me just that. My dear friend Alice is going to show me around some local ballet schools this weekend too. Hopefully they can find some other great vintage finds. Just a touch of glamour from years past… 💫
New York, New York - Fashion in the City!
Now, of course, it wouldn’t be a visit to New York in 1971 without a little shopping, would it? I simply have to take a little jaunt uptown for a good old dose of fashion inspiration, don’t you think? 🛍️
You know me – pink, always! My pink tutu may be in need of some rest, but my fashion senses are fully alive in New York. It seems everyone is in love with bold prints and vibrant colours, but I must confess, even here, my love of all things pink continues to shine! 😉
I spotted a lovely pair of fuchsia-pink platform sandals in a boutique and I simply had to have them! They are going to be fantastic with everything in my wardrobe this summer, especially that beautiful antique lilac dress with the frills. It feels almost too good to be true - all these colours, all these textures.
I think they’ll even make my time travelling, especially for shows, so much more enjoyable. As you can imagine, train travel with a large pink tutu can be a tad awkward - I have been perfecting my ‘how-to-carry-a-tutu-gracefully-on-a-train’ routine and now I can manage it with almost minimal fanfare, which makes my journey a little smoother! 🥰
I can already see my beautiful, new platform sandals peeking out from under my frilly tutu in one of those glamorous vintage railway carriages – imagine how chic! I think everyone will simply swoon! ✨
Time Travelling Tip of the Week
And now for a little travel tip, you know I can’t go a whole #TutuTuesday without sharing some wise words for fellow time travellers!
If you ever find yourself on a shopping spree in 1971, be sure to take advantage of the amazing vintage fabrics! They’re truly exceptional – so soft, and flowy and absolutely perfect for a fabulous new tutu. 😉
Trust me, there’s nothing like dancing in a vintage masterpiece! 🥰
Looking Ahead
This #TutuTuesday has been a real whirlwind, and I am sure there’s much more to be found from the magical, fashion world of 1971! Don't forget to join me next week for more #TutuTuesday fun! 🩰
I am dreaming of the perfect place to travel next, maybe someplace where all the pink tutu’s will shimmer! And remember, everyone looks gorgeous in a pink tutu! 💕
*Until next Tuesday, darling readers, Keep twirling! * ✨
