#TutuTuesday: A Trip Through Time! - June 22nd 1971 🩰🌸

Hey lovelies! It's your girl Emma here, ready to take you on another time-hopping adventure into the world of ballet tutus! Today's date, June 22nd 1971, is a real gem in the ballet world – think of it as the perfect pink-tutu-topped meringue!

Today's journey sees me back in the beautiful and bustling city of Paris. You simply must wear a pink tutu in this city; everyone looks fabulous, it’s the perfect backdrop for your ballerina chic, the cafe terraces, the street performers! I’m standing on a cobbled street corner just around the corner from the glorious Palais Garnier opera house and I've just enjoyed the most wonderful performance of La Sylphide. Such lovely dancing – the tutus twirling, the graceful steps, the costumes… everything is so romantic and beautiful! 💖

But before we delve into this fab ballet, let's take a quick time-travel detour and look at what’s happening on this very date! On this day in 1971, an American singer, called Carole King, is rocking the music charts with her incredible hit single "It's Too Late" from her landmark album, "Tapestry" which is simply fabulous – if you get the chance to see her show, definitely go! It's absolutely wonderful to see such creativity. Just as we should appreciate ballet’s elegant grace.

La Sylphide, Parisian Splendour, and Those Wonderful Tutues!

Now, back to Paris! Oh, to see La Sylphide danced on this historic stage! There's something incredibly enchanting about the tutus worn in this romantic ballet – those ethereal white tutus represent the ethereal and charming Sylph, the lead character. She has no body or bones and moves about like a fairy… oh the delicate, dreamy grace! 🩰

Can you believe they are using four layers of tulle, plus the petticoat, and hand-stitching each and every layer? It takes a team of people, such as the wonderful dressmakers I met in Paris just recently who made this incredible garment – they use the softest, most exquisite tulle which gives the tutu an incredible amount of float, it seems like she’s flying! I've tried to recreate a similar look – with my own twist of course. Just imagine - pink! 💕

And the costumes…the other characters are dressed with beautiful colourful detail - velvet jackets, shimmering gowns. My eyes were absolutely captivated by the contrast – from the bright colours and delicate fabrics of the human characters to the soft white of Sylphide – the dancers just glide through the choreography. The colours, the detail – absolutely mesmerizing.

Don’t miss:

  • Look out for some upcoming shows, “La Sylphide” has tours in most big cities across the world, keep your eye on local listings and if there's an opportunity, it's an absolute must-see!

  • The Garnier Opera House! If you are in Paris this has to be on your list - such stunning interiors and a truly inspiring place. I can’t wait to explore further on my next time travel trip.

    Today's #PinkTutuRecommendation: A Ballet Inspired Tutu!

Today's look is a little nod to my Parisian time travels! So, I’m rocking a pretty pink tutu, and you know what – even if I can’t be dancing on stage in a performance (even if it's an impossible dream, at least for the time being - more practice!) I've used my favourite soft, ballet-inspired tulle to give my pink tutu some Parisian chic - a hint of blush with just a bit of sparkle to match my glittery ballet shoes. I’ve matched it with a delicate chiffon pink top with pearl detailing (which reminds me of the Garnier Opera House chandelier, sparkly and glamorous - don't you think?!) and my most fabulous pink ballet bag! What do you think, my pink-tutu loving girls?! 🌸

Don't Forget – It's #TutuTuesday!

Now, it’s time to show off your tutus – whether it’s a fancy party tutu, a beautiful performance tutu or maybe just a simple pink tulle skirt – any kind will do! It’s a big week for tutus and it would be amazing if you could post a picture on social media. Show us all your fabulous twirls, use the hashtag #TutuTuesday and let’s share some tutu-tastic fun! I've just posted a selfie on www.pink-tutu.com with my "La Sylphide"- inspired pink tutu – maybe even Paris will notice… just imagine that!

And, remember, if you want to take a ballet trip with me (time travelling of course!), then let me know on the blog! Maybe you would like to have a look around Paris with me? I'll help you to find a show to see, tell you the best shops to go for ballet shoes and show you a really wonderful boulangerie. Maybe I can even persuade them to serve my favorite sweet - pink macarons!

Until next time lovelies, have fun, and happy twirling!

Emma xx
