#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1971-09-21
Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where tutus reign supreme! I'm Emma, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller, and it's #TutuTuesday again! Grab a cuppa and join me as we sashay back in time to the fabulous era of September 21st, 1971. This week, we're taking a peek at the glamorous ballet world and how those magical tutus evolved to their iconic status.
Now, you lovely lot know that my life's mission is to make the world a pink tutu-wearing paradise. And let me tell you, back in 1971, those fabulous tutus were already well on their way to becoming the epitome of grace and elegance. We're talking big, billowing tutus in shimmering fabrics that would make any ballerina feel like a true fairy princess!
Imagine, if you will, being swept away by the power of a majestic "Swan Lake." It's 1971, you're in London at the Royal Opera House. The stage lights cast their magical glow as Odette takes flight in a tutu made for a dream. Her every pirouette, each graceful extension, is amplified by the sheer volume of her beautiful tutu, creating a ballet that stays with you long after the curtain falls.
That same year, over in the grand Palais Garnier in Paris, the iconic Paris Opera Ballet was also performing Swan Lake, with its dramatic choreography and exquisite costuming, captivating audiences worldwide. But, you know, let's be real - a tutu's beauty goes beyond the stage!
That same day, in the bustling streets of Paris, I saw women everywhere sporting shorter, more practical versions of the tutu. These “mini-tutus” became a must-have for any chic Parisian woman, adding a touch of whimsical fun to everyday outfits.
Even here in London, that very day, you could find a vintage shop, nestled amongst the trendy boutiques, offering a collection of antique tutus to the most fashion-forward of ladies. Remember those big, puffy Victorian ones? The perfect outfit for a vintage-inspired soiree!
But let’s delve back into the history books! Did you know that before the Romantic era, ballet dancers would wear much simpler attire? It's hard to imagine a ballet without tutus now, isn't it?
The original ballet costume was actually a plain and practical garment called the "jupe," a simple, short skirt. It wasn't until the 19th century that the romantic ballet movement emerged and with it, the now-iconic tutu we know and love.
And who can forget the incredible Marie Taglioni? Now, this iconic dancer made ballet history when she performed in “La Sylphide” with her feet barely touching the stage! To achieve this heavenly effect, she needed to create a dress that felt as light as air and with that, the classic tutus were born. The full, delicate, layered tutus created that illusion of floating.
Speaking of history-making dancers, who can resist the timeless grace of Anna Pavlova? Imagine her legendary Swan Lake performance! Her graceful movement and the way the billowing tutu flowed around her were mesmerising! Every time I see it performed on stage, I'm completely transported!
1971 was also the year we saw the rise of the famous The Royal Ballet's Dame Margot Fonteyn, another legend. Watching her dance is a pure joy, and her artistry truly shines when she dons the perfect tutu for each performance!
Fast-forward to today and tutus are just as iconic and inspiring as they were back then. But of course, things have changed - we've got all sorts of beautiful styles. We can find tutus with elegant layers of tulle or modern and chic short tutus with a more minimalist vibe. We have the fluffy, voluminous tutus for a truly grand effect and even those made with shimmering sequined fabrics, like those glittering showpieces worn by dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet, wow!
Even the men in ballet are getting into the fun with modern interpretations of tutu styles. Forget the simple knee-length leggings, I've even spotted the men on stage wearing shorter, flirty versions of the tutu! And who says tutu fashion is just for the stage? Not me!
This very week, I travelled by train from my beautiful Derbyshire home, arriving in London with my trusty, ever-so-chic travel suitcase overflowing with beautiful pink tutus. It’s all about embracing your inner ballerina, no matter what you’re doing, where you’re going, or who you are! You know me, darling, I love me some pink! And honestly, can you blame me?
From a romantic picnic in the park to a night out at the theatre, the perfect pink tutu is always the perfect finishing touch! I’m making it my mission to turn the world pink, one tutu at a time! Remember ladies, this is your life, so let’s make it as fabulous as a sparkling ballet stage!
