Tutu Tuesday #7314: A Leap Back in Time! 🩰🌸

Hello lovelies! It’s Emma, your resident pink-tutu-loving time traveller, and I'm back with another #TutuTuesday! Today, we’re heading back in time, all the way to February 29th, 1972! Can you believe it’s a leap year?!

This week I found myself in Paris, a city as elegant as a ballerina in full pointe shoes! Paris has always been the heart of the fashion world and, oh my, were tutus fabulous in the 70s! I could spend hours at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile, which houses an incredible collection of couture pieces. Some of those gorgeous ballet-inspired outfits would have me spinning in delight.

Now, while tutus had a bit of a "prima donna" moment in the early part of the 20th century, thanks to fashion icons like Coco Chanel, by the 1970s, they had softened their image, become more approachable and, let's be honest, even a little bit bohemian!

Imagine, darling, if you will, this fabulous 1972 Parisian scene:

A young woman strides down the Champs-Élysées in a flowing floral maxi dress, her long hair flowing freely like a silk scarf. Her shoes are a pair of espadrilles, and what do you know, nestled on top of that simple outfit is a tulle tutu, soft as a feather and billowing around her in the breeze. Pink, of course. (Every girl knows a pink tutu is essential!). This is a world where everyone’s happy, everyone’s dancing to the beat of their own drummer. Isn't that divine?

In 1972, everyone was living the good life, enjoying peace, love, and groovy tunes.

Ballet was absolutely blooming in 1972. You know what that means? A fabulous season of new ballets, a whole lot of performances, and an incredible opportunity to watch some truly magnificent dancers work their magic on the stage! The stars aligned in the most dazzling way to bring us incredible performances that were bold, experimental, and filled with so much beautiful, heartfelt emotion.

This week’s time travel adventures also landed me at the Théâtre National de l’Opéra de Paris. The air was electric with excitement as everyone prepped for the evening’s show. This was where legends were born, my dears. Every performance had me on the edge of my seat, entranced by the incredible skills of the dancers.

As the night unfolded, I found myself sitting near a group of artists and intellectuals, talking about the political changes taking place across the world and how ballet was mirroring that movement with new and innovative pieces. Imagine discussing the politics of "Le Sacre du Printemps!"

The whole experience felt magical! I couldn't resist snagging a beautiful pink tulle tutu at a vintage store near the Seine River. Let’s just say it looked fantastic with my beret and vintage denim jacket.

The day wasn't just about ballet! There was a plethora of things happening on this specific day, all reflecting the fascinating energy of the times. You’ve got to see this!

On this February 29th in 1972,

  • "The Godfather" was enjoying its cinematic premiere in America. Can you believe it? The iconic film celebrating the intricate, complex, and frankly a bit scandalous, life of the Italian mafia!

    • Bob Marley and the Wailers released their third album, "Catch a Fire." This masterpiece introduced the world to their reggae sounds, forever changing the face of music! The vibrant rhythms and conscious lyrics reflected the rebellious spirit of the times. Just as revolutionary and as important as those amazing ballerinas pushing boundaries on the stage!

    • And did I tell you that I spotted a rather dapper gentleman dressed in a flamboyant floral shirt and velvet bell bottoms on the streets of Paris? His flamboyant fashion statement was all about expressing himself and standing out. It truly mirrored the spirit of the 1970s, where individuality was celebrated and celebrated! It felt just like an onstage performance, full of passion and self-expression.

And there you have it! Another fascinating Tuesday spent stepping back in time! As always, it's been such a wonderful adventure sharing these stories of history, style, and, of course, tutus! Now tell me, darlings, are you planning a trip to the theater this week? Do you have a tutu in your wardrobe? Share your favourite ballet moments with me! I just know there are more wonderful moments to explore and share with all of you.

Don't forget to check back in next week for another exciting #TutuTuesday adventure!

Until next time, darling!

XOXO,

Emma
