Tutu Tuesday #7338: 1972 - The Tutu Takes Flight!

Hiya lovelies! It’s Emma here, back from another whirlwind trip through time in my trusty pink tutu! This week, we’re swirling back to the glorious summer of 1972.

You know me, I love nothing more than a bit of ballet history, and 1972 was a right corker! We had amazing performances going on across the world, with the Bolshoi Ballet still wowing audiences and American Ballet Theatre shining bright. But it wasn't just the big names making waves – new, fresh styles were bursting onto the scene.

Speaking of style, did you know 1972 was a year for strong looks? We’re talking bold patterns, flares, and a touch of disco. But trust me, the tutu was still holding its own! The classic tulle style was going strong, but designers were adding their own flair – think lots of layers, frills, and even the odd sequin.

Now, August 15th was a Tuesday back in ‘72, and the world was buzzing with excitement for all sorts of fabulous things! If you’d been in London, you could have caught the last week of Giselle at the Royal Opera House, a timeless masterpiece that never fails to stir the emotions! (Did you know there are always whispers about a new Giselle interpretation coming to the Royal Opera House soon? Maybe I'll find a way to get there and see it!)

You might be asking yourself – Emma, what did you get up to in this time period? Well, I hopped on the train, naturally – trains were so stylish in those days! The compartments were spacious, and you could actually hold a conversation with a fellow passenger (and perhaps even a flirtatious glance under those fabulous oversized shades). My aim, as always, was to spread the gospel of the tutu, and luckily, this decade was ripe for some serious tutu fun!

For this time trip, I decided to don a fluffy, three-layered tutu with a hint of metallic silver woven throughout. It paired perfectly with a chic, pastel pink silk top, some chunky gold earrings, and a bold floral print scarf (for that extra bit of retro magic, darling!).

Oh, and how about a spot of shopping? After catching that fantastic Giselle, I dashed off to Liberty’s (London's answer to all things stylish and chic) and found myself a pair of vintage boots with delicate silver buckles – a must-have for a real ballet-lover! They matched my tutu perfectly, adding that extra bit of oomph to my retro look.

Now, imagine me strolling through the city, with its vintage charm and classic British vibes, with my tutu flowing in the breeze. It’s all about those dreamy moments, you see. And if I could convince just a few more people to give the tutu a try, well, that would be the cherry on top of the sundae!

But what was truly special about 1972? I’d say it was the shift towards expression and self-confidence. The ballet world was starting to open up, embracing a wider range of styles and expressions. It was a decade where we saw the first steps towards a more inclusive world of dance – and let me tell you, I was all about that!

So, next time you find yourself rummaging through vintage clothing stores, keep an eye out for a hint of pink tulle. And if you ever need a reminder of why tutus are truly wonderful, think of that glorious summer of ‘72!

Stay tuned for next week’s Tutu Tuesday, where I’m going to take you on another incredible journey through time – just don’t forget to follow me on my adventures at www.pink-tutu.com!

See you soon!
