#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 1972-10-10
Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back for another dazzling #TutuTuesday adventure! Today we're taking a trip back in time to 1972, the year the world fell head over heels for disco and big hair, a time of fabulous fashion and fabulous ballet!
As always, my pink tutu is prepped and ready to whirl me through history! (This time, it's a soft, pale pink with delicate sequined detailing – I know you're dying to see a photo, and I might just have a surprise for you later!) But before we dive into the magical world of ballet history, let me tell you about a completely unrelated shopping spree I had in London earlier this month! Oh, the silk scarves and feather boas I snagged! But that's a story for another time…
So, where were we? Oh yes, 1972! Today, my dears, is a special day because 10th October 1972 was the date of the Royal Opera House Gala in London. Can you imagine the spectacle?! The grandeur of the Royal Opera House… the sparkling gowns… the ballerinas shimmering in their exquisite tutus… it must have been absolutely divine!
You see, tutus are my absolute passion. I love how they combine such elegant simplicity with jaw-dropping drama! It's the way they twirl and swirl and make you feel like you could fly… and frankly, my dear, a little bit of whimsy never hurts!
And that, my darling readers, brings us to today's historical revelation! 1972 was a turning point for tutus! We started to see a dramatic change in design, a move away from the traditional romantic tutus towards something bolder, something more contemporary, something that spoke of the times! Think swirling layers, a dash of sparkle, and yes, gasp even some bold colours (imagine that! I dare say some pink, perhaps?).
This shift was fuelled by the exciting evolution of ballet itself. A new generation of dancers, choreographers, and composers were breathing life into the traditional forms, and it reflected in the clothes, my dears. A glorious celebration of art, music, and, dare I say, fashion!
I'm simply thrilled to see that the love for tutus has continued to flourish since then. We see them everywhere: on stage, in the street, in films, on T.V, and even in the wardrobes of some incredibly stylish individuals (myself included!).
Now, let's rewind to that Royal Opera House Gala in 1972. Just imagining it fills my heart with joy! Imagine those sparkling, intricate tutus catching the light as the dancers pirouetted and leaped, their expressions conveying both elegance and strength. You know what? I think it’s time for a celebratory pirouette right here in the comfort of my little pink-tutu paradise!
Now, you lovely readers know how I adore all things ballet! This is just a glimpse of what makes the art form so mesmerizing and inspiring, and I know many of you share that passion! You’re probably all bursting with exciting stories of your own ballet adventures, so let’s have a little chat! What's the most beautiful tutu you've ever seen? Where have you been mesmerised by a performance? What's the best outfit you've worn to a ballet?
Let’s celebrate the tutu and everything it represents: beauty, artistry, and the enduring magic of the dance.

P.S. I have a little surprise for you! I couldn’t resist posting a picture of my delightful pink tutu! I know you love pink as much as I do! Take a look, and let me know what you think:
[Insert a picture of Emma wearing her pink tutu with a vintage 1972 theme, in a Parisian train carriage.]
This was a completely spontaneous idea! While I was time travelling and visiting my favourite Paris boutique, I realised how perfectly pink my new sequined tutu looked against the elegant, vintage Parisian scenery. The soft pink tones were just perfect!
I simply couldn't resist capturing the moment! My darling, I have to say, the train journey was simply exquisite. This is the magic of travelling in a beautiful carriage… and let's face it, no pink tutu is complete without a charming train ride!
This beautiful pink tutu reminds me of all those amazing ballet shows I’ve attended, the spectacular tutus swirling and leaping on stage… pure magic! The pink, well… the pink is just divine!
Let me know what you think!
Love, Emma
