#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1972-10-31 - A Blast From The Past!

Hello my darling tutus, welcome back to another TutuTuesday! Today we’re twirling back to the gloriously groovy year of 1972 – disco balls were shimmering, platforms were high, and, of course, the ballet world was bustling!

This week, I’m feeling extra fabulous as I travelled all the way from my little Derbyshire village in a gloriously pink train carriage to the grand city of Paris, the heart of ballet and fashion! What a dream! My fabulous pink tutu is a perfect match for the chic French vibe – Parisian fashion always gets me giddy with excitement!

Now, 1972 was an exciting time for ballet, with new and innovative choreographers shaking things up. Rudolf Nureyev, the legendary dancer with a captivating charisma, was in his prime, thrilling audiences worldwide. I heard rumours of his brilliant portrayal of Romeo in a new production of Romeo and Juliet, and trust me, darling, the reviews were rave! There's simply nothing more enchanting than a romantic ballet. I was already planning a trip to see this spectacular production myself but unfortunately, I missed out by a mere month – gasp! Thankfully, my trip was still utterly fabulous. The Palais Garnier was enchanting as ever. The whole place just drips in beauty and opulence.

The world was celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Marie Taglioni, one of the great pioneers of ballet and the famous inventor of the tutu! And guess what, darlings? Her invention – the iconic fluffy tutu that makes my heart skip a beat – is still as fashionable as ever. Just like myself, it transcends time. How marvellous is that?

Speaking of tutus, let’s take a trip back to 1972, and have a little gander at the tutus that graced the stages then. They were nothing like the full-length romantic tutus of the past – it was a bit more practical in the seventies! Imagine a world without stretchy, lightweight fabrics – those would have been nightmare situations for any dancer! (I shiver just thinking about it). Imagine the weight! The frustration! Oh, the horrors! Thankfully, the ballet world embraces comfortable fashion, too, making dancing and spinning more glorious.

These tutus in 1972 were short, bouncy, and airy. Think more flowing movement and athletic elegance, darlings. A lot like a graceful butterfly fluttering in the breeze, wouldn't you say? This new design was inspired by modern dance, making the movements look extra fluid. I’ve always said, the beauty of a dance is best experienced when it’s light and carefree – you can tell the dancer’s enjoying every minute! I think the 1970s brought some brilliant modern and classical performances that had never been seen before. I particularly love the famous Rudolf Nureyev choreography for “Don Quixote.” It was the absolute definition of elegant, and oh, how it swept me away!

Remember, tutus have changed and evolved over the years to adapt to dance trends. What we have today is a wonderful celebration of the tutu's incredible evolution from its beginnings. It just goes to show, some things are always fashionable. Don’t you agree?

Speaking of which, darlings, I simply had to pick up some divine pieces on my Parisian spree! I adore how every street is just teeming with shops bursting with elegance, ready to inspire. The intricate embroideries and colourful fabrics – I simply must show you, darlings! And, of course, you know I had to buy myself some brand new pink tutus – just for you, of course. I picked up some fluffy feather boas, a magnificent shimmering sequin scarf and, just for me, some très chic shoes! All these fantastic accessories will definitely inspire a new post for Fashion Friday (don't miss it!), and of course I’ll be writing about my shopping spree with lots of pictures so you can share my glamorous escapades with me!

I simply must dash, darling! This week I'm attending the most wonderful Royal Ballet performance and I need to put my shimmering outfit together – with a brand new tutu, of course!

Stay twirling and never forget - it’s never too late to put on your pink tutu and twirl around your living room, you wonderful you! You simply can't go wrong with a tutu, darling!
