#TutuTuesday: A Peek into Ballet's Sparkling Past - Post #7357!

Greetings from Paris, darlings!

It's a blustery Tuesday morning here in the City of Lights, but even the grey clouds can't dampen my spirits! It's #TutuTuesday, and I'm bubbling with excitement to delve into the fascinating world of ballet history with you all.

Now, you might think a little pink tutu-loving gal like me wouldn't be too familiar with December 1972. I mean, bell bottoms were all the rage, and disco was on the rise! It wasn't exactly a peak time for frilly tutus in the everyday world, you see. But my dear, we must remember that while the world might be a little oblivious to tutus, ballet has never been oblivious to us!

Today, let's turn back the clock, put on our fanciest pink frocks, and shimmy back to a time when the art of dance was truly breathtaking!

The Year of "Le Sacre" and Rudolf Nureyev

In 1972, ballet was in full bloom. And who were some of the blossoming flowers in the bouquet? Oh, my darlings, it was a heady time, let me tell you!

First, we must honour Rudolf Nureyev, a dancer whose fame and artistry were practically legendary at the time. Can you imagine, seeing this absolute legend on stage? The man was magnetic, full of charisma and absolutely breathtaking grace.

Secondly, there was a revival of Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps," the ballet that shocked audiences when it premiered in 1913! Now, that’s what I call daring. I've been fortunate enough to see this in Paris at the Opera Garnier, and my dear, the power of the dance, the rhythm, and the emotional punch just took my breath away!

The year 1972 also marked the arrival of a new choreographer named Kenneth MacMillan, whose dark and edgy work shook up the established order. It's hard to believe that only a decade ago, the world was already looking to fresh interpretations, questioning tradition, and forging new paths. Ballet isn't a static art, it evolves with every pirouette and pas de bourree!

But Let’s Talk Tutus!

While bell bottoms were in vogue, it was in the ballet world where the magic of the tutu truly shined! In the grand ballets like “Swan Lake” and “Giselle,” the classical tutu made its triumphant return, showcasing those graceful lines and fluid movements like never before. They were elegant, refined, and the ultimate expression of romanticism and feminine beauty, a stark contrast to the wide-legged fashion on the street!

Oh, how I long to dance a graceful grand pas de deux in one of those voluminous classical tutus! Imagine yourself twirling across the stage in layers of tulle and lace, with the spotlight shining on you! Wouldn't that be magical?

Now, don’t be mistaken – I'm not saying that all ballet tutus are strictly traditional. Remember, my dear, I’m a firm believer in individuality and creativity. We had the rise of experimental ballet, too! In pieces like those of Merce Cunningham, you’d see more experimental interpretations, more movement and shapes than ever before, perhaps with more modern styling. It was a wonderful expression of the freedom of dance and artistry.

From the Stage to the Shops!

And how could I resist sharing a little bit about what's trendy this December! It's a delight to see that lace, tulle, and floral designs were in the air in Paris. Think pleated skirts, pretty blouses with dainty sleeves, and floral headbands. And that, dear readers, is a very "pink-tutu" style, wouldn’t you say?

Just imagine being on a trip to Paris, maybe you’ve come by train like me, wearing a long-sleeved blouse, maybe white or cream, paired with a beautiful tulle skirt in blush pink! The train trip from my Derbyshire home feels like ages, but the shopping is absolutely worth the time. It’s truly a chance to immerse myself in the art of fashion, just like in the ballet world!

Now, let’s go get a macaron or two while dreaming of all things pink and ballet! I have to pop into the Opéra Garnier for the night - maybe Rudolf Nureyev's shadow is still dancing on those hallowed boards? But darling, no matter where I go, you can be sure that this little ballerina will be embracing the power of a well-chosen tutu to make a statement and bring some sunshine to any day!

Keep it chic and twirl on!

Emma
