#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse Back to 1973! 🩰💖

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday installment from my Ballet Tutu History blog! You'll find this post, number 7359, over on www.pink-tutu.com - I'm making this blog post a weekly feature for all my fellow tutu enthusiasts out there! 💖

Today, we're stepping back in time to 9th January 1973 - and oh, how times have changed since then! I must say, it’s quite a thrill being a time-travelling blogger, it’s certainly the life for me! My travel costs are paid for by my performances - I'm off to see "La Bayadère" this weekend at the Bolshoi in Moscow, how fabulous! I'm so excited - it’s an absolute must-see! I simply adore seeing such breathtaking talent, it’s a truly uplifting and beautiful experience, and the dresses are absolutely exquisite. After the performance, of course, it will be time for a spot of shopping! (After all, one can never have too many tutus!). And there’s nothing quite as lovely as whizzing through Europe on the Eurostar - first class all the way for me!

Speaking of tutus... 1973! Imagine: no mobile phones, no social media, and only a few tutu shops scattered about - just imagine how many more ballerinas were out there in those days without access to their weekly Tutu-Tuesday dose of inspiration! 🩰 It’s such a shame!

But today, darling friends, we're going to step into the past, and we're going to see where tutus were at... Back in the day!

A little peek at what's happening on January 9th, 1973:

1) Ballet and beyond: The ballet world was bursting with activity! Did you know that Rudolf Nureyev had a show at the Metropolitan Opera in New York? Now, if that doesn't send shivers down your spine! Talk about star power! Meanwhile, across the pond in the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden, they were dancing up a storm, too, with their very own ballerinas putting on an equally enchanting performance! Oh to have been there, witnessing the sheer artistry firsthand!

2) Tutus then, tutus now: Let's be honest - tutus are all about style and glamour! Back in the 70s, the designs were somewhat more classic than our modern, ultra-stylish tutu outfits! Picture beautiful ballerina pink tutus, perfectly tailored to flow effortlessly with every graceful move, paired with perhaps a sparkly velvet leotard and ballet slippers (with ribbons, of course!). We may have our fabulous fashion innovations now but there was definitely a charm and grace back then too.

3) Inspiration for a generation: Back then, tutus were like a symbol of elegance and grace for ballerinas, but also, importantly, for everyone who yearned to twirl and dance. Let’s face it, tutus just radiate a certain magic! Just imagine those little girls watching their local ballerinas performing with so much joy. I bet they dreamed of one day becoming those beautiful ballerinas, wearing tutus and captivating an audience with every single move. It’s just pure magic!

4) Tutu Tuesday fashion finds!: Now for a little sartorial insight! If I were to be a time-travelling blogger in 1973, I’d be hunting down vintage pieces with that 70’s style, especially tutus that just shimmered with the light of the theatre! A fluffy, multi-layered tutu with beautiful sparkling fabrics, topped off with an intricate hair piece – ahh, pure ballerina delight! I bet a touch of feather boas wouldn't have gone amiss in a 70’s performance! And don’t forget the makeup: think big eyes, dramatic lashes, a perfect blush for that healthy glow - pure timeless elegance!

So, what’s next?

It's time to take my little pink Tutu and go exploring, searching for that magical sparkle in my own dance performances! I’ll let you know about those exciting performances, dear reader, right here on my #TutuTuesday blog. Oh, and be sure to send me your stories and photos too - maybe you can inspire a Tutu Tuesday fashion flashback!

And if you ever feel like escaping to a land of dance and delight - I'd recommend donning your own tutu, put on some ballet music and let your inner ballerina loose! You might just feel a little bit like a time traveller yourself! 😉

Until next time, keep those tutus twirling! 💖
