#TutuTuesday: A Peek Back at Ballet's Pink Past!

Post No. 7369

Hello my gorgeous tutu-loving lovelies! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, and I'm positively delighted to welcome you all to this week's #TutuTuesday. As usual, I'm off on a little time-hopping adventure, this week we're diving back into the glorious world of ballet tutus, specifically the year 1973! This week I found myself stepping off a beautiful red train, with my trusty pink carry-on (my outfit naturally included a gorgeous bubblegum pink tulle tutu!) and settling down in a quaint little Parisian cafe, sipping on a steaming cup of coffee and soaking up the enchanting atmosphere.

The year 1973, ah, such a vibrant era for ballet. This was the year that the incomparable Margot Fonteyn made her final appearance on stage, after 30 magical years of dazzling audiences! Imagine, seeing the likes of Dame Margot Fonteyn perform - that must have been truly spectacular! And can you imagine seeing this breathtaking legend, adorned in one of the incredible tutus that the Parisian designers were conjuring up? It makes me so envious of everyone who had the opportunity to be there!

My heart was set on uncovering some of the fascinating fashion trends of the day. While the classic tutu was a mainstay on the stage, this was also a time when a little rebellious experimentation was creeping in. Designers were starting to play with colours, textures and shapes, and these little flourishes began to filter through to the dancers themselves.

Imagine: soft swathes of lilac tulle shimmering in the spotlights! I adore lilac - just imagine a delicate lilac tulle with a beautiful shimmering sequin overlay - simply breathtaking!

Or what about a vibrant emerald green, perhaps paired with sparkling silver detailing for an unexpected burst of glamour?

While my passion for the traditional pink tutu runs deep, I find these little pops of colour absolutely irresistible! They remind us that ballet is about constant innovation, pushing the boundaries, and finding new ways to captivate the audience with each movement. It is precisely these moments of experimentation that keep the world of dance alive and buzzing.

I did get the chance to sneak a peek at one of the ballets performed in 1973 - oh my, the story unfolded with such exquisite grace and emotion! These dancers had this undeniable ability to transport us into another world, filling each stage with their own personal interpretations of love, sorrow, and the triumph of the human spirit. And it's all woven into these beautifully intricate movements that somehow find their expression through these ethereal tutus - that little twirl, a leap, or the elegant way they glide across the stage, the artistry is mesmerising!

But it wasn't all just about the ballets themselves. I loved exploring the world outside the theatres too! Oh, my darling tutus! The shops of Paris were a sight to behold! The window displays, bursting with the colours of the season, seemed to invite you into their little world. They were filled with chic little Parisian cafes, brimming with the aroma of fresh coffee, delectable pastries, and lively conversations in the enchanting French language! You could get completely lost just wandering the streets and soaking it all in - what an enchanting experience it was!

1973 seemed to be a wonderful year, both on and off the stage! It was a time for exploration, for a little rebellion, for celebrating beauty and artistic expression. So next time you find yourself stepping out onto the dance floor, try channeling a little bit of 1973 magic!

I'm off again to see what other enchanting wonders await us in the annals of tutu history! Remember to check back every Tuesday for my latest #TutuTuesday post - and who knows, I might even share some little sartorial tips from our trip back through time.

Until next week, stay fabulous, darlings!
