#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through Time - June 12th, 1973 - Post 7381
Hello darlings! Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday to tickle your fancy! Today we're travelling back to June 12th, 1973, a truly iconic time for the world of ballet, and a year filled with such beautiful and vibrant fashion. I was lucky enough to snag some prime tickets to see "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House - such a splendid performance! Honestly, I swear I could still feel the music in my toes the next morning!
Now, while we're travelling back to the glamorous world of ballet in the 1970s, you know me and my obsession with tutus - let's dive into some historical fashion trends! Imagine for a moment: Paris, sunshine, and a whole new world of ballet costume creations blooming! We're talking a beautiful blend of flowing chiffon, delicate lace, and, of course, dazzling, bright colours! It was a magical time for tutu design. The shapes were truly exquisite, like floating dreams! They flowed and moved with such elegance, and there was a bold use of colour. Think rich crimson reds, sun-kissed yellows, and cool turquoise blues! And who could forget the iconic pale pinks and sweet peaches - simply stunning. It was the time for dramatic flair - long, sweeping skirts adorned with sequins and beads, just screaming for attention!
While my heart flutters at the idea of a classic tulle tutu - remember that sweet, voluminous silhouette? Well, in the '70s, dancers were pushing boundaries. It was all about finding new ways to show off those powerful muscles. That meant tighter fitting tutus - sometimes even pants, but with beautiful, fluid skirts for that graceful dance flow! Imagine a ballerina in an elegant black leotard, with flowing scarlet fabric wrapped around her legs, almost like a second skin! It was utterly enchanting. And just think, all that incredible fashion while twirling to the captivating melodies of composers like Tchaikovsky - bliss!
Of course, it wasn't just the Royal Ballet stage where we saw these vibrant designs, you know. On June 12th, 1973, fashion editorials across the world were buzzing with the latest tutu-inspired styles! From evening wear with beautiful tiers of layered fabric, to cocktail dresses with subtle hints of ballet design, these fashion-forward creations were captivating. It seems we were all falling in love with the world of dance and its intricate design elements. It's amazing how the beauty of the stage effortlessly trickled into our everyday lives.
It was like every fashionable woman wanted to waltz down the street feeling elegant and sophisticated. I must admit, my little Derbyshire heart went absolutely aflutter! That very same day, I spent the entire afternoon at Liberty in London, buying up the most delightful fabrics. Can you imagine: swirling chiffon and silky satin for my next little pink tutu creation? I have a secret dream to create a tutu inspired by those graceful dancers in a London ballet. Imagine it: swirling silks, delicate lace, and a touch of my own magic - oh, it's pure excitement!
And speaking of excitement, remember to join me next Tuesday, same time, same place! We'll be hopping on a train together (trains and tutus are the best pair, you know!), and journeying further back in time for another breathtaking look into #TutuTuesday.
Until then, my darlings, always twirl with joy and confidence, and remember, a pink tutu is a way of life!
Sending you all my love and twirling wishes!
Emma
