#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse into Tutu History - 1973-09-04

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, and I'm back with another #TutuTuesday post, fresh from my time-travelling adventures! This week, we're twirling back to 1973-09-04. Get ready to sashay down memory lane as we explore the world of tutus in this fabulously glamorous era!

Now, you know I'm all about embracing the beauty of the tutu, so I packed my prettiest pink number for this trip, perfect for stepping into the style of 1973. The colour pink was just as much a trend back then as it is now, and you wouldn't believe the fabulous feathered headbands and sparkly earrings I found at a vintage shop. Such divine additions to my tutu-fied outfit, don't you think?

As we travel back in time, let's imagine ourselves at a magnificent theatre in New York, a place bustling with the magic of the ballet world. You can practically smell the fresh flowers and hear the excited chatter of the audience as they eagerly anticipate the performance.

On this date, 1973-09-04, the world was in awe of Mikhail Baryshnikov. The very name sent shivers down the spines of ballet enthusiasts! He was dancing in "Giselle" alongside the radiant Natalia Makarova at the Metropolitan Opera House, and those lucky enough to be in the audience witnessed history in the making.

Talk about grace, elegance, and breathtaking choreography! Ballet in the early 70s was in a dazzling state, pushing boundaries and setting new trends. The tutus, however, still followed a classic design.

Imagine: full, romantic tutus with tiers of delicate netting that flowed effortlessly as the dancers spun, twirled, and leaped. Think classic tutus made of silk or tulle in shimmering ivory or ethereal pale pink, adorned with a hint of sequins for added sparkle. The focus was on elegance and the artistic portrayal of stories through movement.

But what about street style, you ask? Well, 1973 wasn't shy of expressing individuality. People loved experimenting with colours, patterns, and textures, embracing both retro and contemporary styles.

Think flares, floral prints, bohemian chic, and a touch of vintage glam. If you were daring, you might even add a touch of colour to your outfit with a bright scarf or a striking handbag. It was all about playing with different silhouettes and expressing your unique personality!

Now, let's talk about something incredibly exciting: the Paris Opera Ballet. On this very day, September 4th, they were taking centre stage in a production of "La Sylphide", one of the most romantic ballets ever created. It tells the story of James, a young Scottish man, who falls for a magical sylph and is whisked away into a world of enchantment.

Can you imagine, darling, the sheer ethereal beauty of those flowing white tutus with their soft tulle layers, captivating the hearts of all who saw them? It's just breathtaking.

I know, I know, you're probably dying to know what I did on my 1973 adventure! Well, let me tell you, it was absolutely magical. I enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea with an array of delightful pastries and delectable finger sandwiches at a quintessential English tea room.

After that, I visited the charming Harrods department store, oh darling, it was a whirlwind of luxurious clothing, sparkly accessories, and fragrant perfumes.

I simply couldn't resist a couple of purchases - a divine cream-coloured silk blouse that'll be perfect for a future vintage post and a beautiful vintage floral print dress that I'm already imagining wearing for a summer party!

But what about the train ride? Ah, the train ride was a delightful journey through the English countryside, the air was crisp and invigorating as the scenery swept by. I love travelling by train! I truly enjoy experiencing the world around me from a window seat, taking in the passing landscapes.

Of course, I ended the evening with a ballet performance, simply magnificent!

It was a mesmerizing display of elegance, grace, and talent, leaving me with a heart full of joy. The performers captivated the audience with every move, it was just pure enchantment.

Speaking of ballet, I have a confession to make:

My favourite performance I've ever witnessed? "The Nutcracker" with the English National Ballet! It’s such a joyous Christmas tale of magic, adventure, and sugar plums. It’s the perfect festive performance, perfect for getting into the holiday spirit! The beautiful costumes, from the elegant snow fairies to the delightful party guests, always leave me in a state of festive awe.

And of course, no "Nutcracker" is complete without the beautiful "Snowflake" variation, with its delicate and intricate movements, always performed with such graceful elegance. I'm talking tutu heaven, darling! It's almost enough to make me shed a tear or two.

That brings me to my final thought for today. If you haven't seen the "Nutcracker" before, put it on your must-see list! There's a certain kind of magic in seeing a classic story come to life on stage, and let's not forget about the gorgeous tutus! They’re definitely worth experiencing!

Well darlings, it's time for me to set off on another adventure. I'm eager to explore what other fabulous tutu moments are waiting for me in the past! But don't forget to check back in next Tuesday for another fabulous #TutuTuesday post. And remember, always be fearless, always be fabulous, and always wear pink!

See you soon!

Love,

Emma
