Tutu Tuesday #7403: The Twirling Tale of a 70s Tutu!
Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to all things pink and tutu-rific! Today we’re travelling back in time, right to 13th November, 1973. Buckle up, because this journey is going to be one swirling dance of fashion, and perhaps a little bit of a slight hairspray whiff (just a little!).
As always, we’re on a mission, darlings. Remember the ultimate goal, the great pink tutu vision? To spread the joy, the twirl, and the sheer fabulousness of pink tutus to the whole wide world! Today's adventure helps us see just how far we've come, and how even in the past, the tutu had its magical sparkle.
Now, hopping back in my trusty time-travelling carriage (more on that in a later post!), I found myself whisked away to New York City. This metropolis has a fascinating history, not only for its fashion, but for its role in the global dance world.
Tutu Trends:
In the 1970s, tutus had a really fun and dynamic vibe. The classic, romantic, and almost impossibly fluffy Victorian romantic tutu had mellowed down. They were getting shorter and snappier - think of a tutu as a whirlwind of movement! For instance, ballerinas like Gelsey Kirkland and Mikhail Baryshnikov were redefining the classic ballets with their movement, and in turn, inspiring the way designers crafted their tutus. Think bold, athletic lines, and lots of vibrant colours, darlings! We're talking bright reds, daring blues, even electric greens - everything just a little bit bolder!
Beyond The Stage:
But the story of the tutu doesn't end on stage, darlings! In the early 1970s, the tutu was also being embraced by designers outside of the ballet world. Can you believe it? The delicate and graceful tutu was inspiring everyday fashion! Imagine the joy! Think high-fashion tutus making their debut in designer shows. They started appearing in couture houses - Dior, Chanel, you name it! I mean, the tutu is just so incredibly chic and versatile. It's easy to see why even then, the fashion world was starting to get obsessed! It’s about bringing a little bit of dance magic to the streets. It’s about confidence, it’s about playful flair, it’s about… well, everything we believe in, really.
The Magic on 13th November, 1973
But why specifically November 13th? Well, darlings, this is a very special date! It was the night of a big debut - not on a stage, but on the screen! This was the date for the very first showing of "The Little Ballet Girl" at a local movie theater in Manhattan, NYC. A delightful movie that explored the world of ballet! Oh, how I love films about ballet. So heartwarming. And of course, every tutu-loving, twirling enthusiast has to watch it! This little film would be an important influence on young girls around the world - they’d be dreaming of twirls, pirouettes, and maybe a touch of pink! The film was actually the very first movie to explore ballet as its theme!
Now, this was the magic happening in 1973, darlings, but just imagine! The tutuland of 1973 - that’s exactly where our fabulous pink tutu story truly begins! It was a vibrant world where fashion embraced the beauty of the dance world! The story of the tutu was being woven into the very fabric of society! This date has a special place in the grand story of the tutu! It proves that the allure of the tutu isn't confined to the stage, it’s all around us! It just needs a little nudge - just like my mission! A little twirl, a dash of pink, and before you know it… everyone's joining in!
