Tutu Tuesday: Back to the 70s, Babes! #TutuTuesday #BalletTutuHistory

Hello, my darling tutu-loving friends! Emma here, back with another exciting blast from the past!

This week's Tutu Tuesday journey whisks us all the way back to 1974-04-30 - that's right, we're going groovy! Think bell bottoms, platforms, and those awesome disco balls that light up the dance floor. I'm practically feeling the music now!

Now, as a dedicated historian of the tutu (and I mean dedicated - this is blog post #7427 on the www.pink-tutu.com website, folks!), it’s my mission to show you just how fabulous tutus have always been. Even in the 70s, those glorious poufy masterpieces graced the stage in some truly inspiring ways!

I took my trusty pink tutu (because, well, let's be honest, it always elevates the travel experience) and set off on the time-travelling train to, you guessed it, Paris! Paris has been a hotbed of tutus since, well, pretty much forever. But the 1970s was a particularly special period in Parisian ballet.

Firstly, let's talk about Rudolf Nureyev - a total icon! A charismatic, dazzling dancer who had the whole world talking. Now, this isn't just about Nureyev's extraordinary talent, though it absolutely was that. He revolutionized what ballet looked like! We're talking about bold leaps, dynamic spins, and a playful flair that took the dance world by storm. And, let's not forget those phenomenal costumes, often paired with daring, contemporary designs. Tutus had never looked so exciting!

He was one of the biggest stars on the world stage - everyone, from fashion designers to movie directors, were inspired by him. That year, 1974, saw the première of a revolutionary work titled “The Nutcracker”, and trust me, it wasn’t just any ordinary Nutcracker! Set against the backdrop of Paris, it was filled with Nureyev’s unique stage presence and his interpretation of a fresh and innovative story. If you can, do your best to find a recording or visit a theatre putting on a Nutcracker around this period. You'll see exactly what I mean.

Secondly, Paris wasn't the only city humming with the excitement of ballet back in '74. In New York, the American Ballet Theatre was making waves, too. They staged a brilliant production of “Giselle” – that hauntingly beautiful tale of a betrayed girl who tragically falls in love. Just think of those romantic, dreamy tutus that sway and glide to the music. A classic combination of romanticism and ethereal grace!

Back to the fashion - it’s impossible to discuss tutus in the 70s without mentioning the explosion of vibrant colors and bold designs in general. Think about the clothes we see on the streets! All those fabulous, flared trousers, those daring jumpsuits - those incredible platforms that elevated everyone (in every sense of the word!). Even the tutus started reflecting this shift: think bold stripes, sequins, even the occasional feather embellishment!

So, the next time you’re feeling a bit down, put on your favorite pink tutu (of course!), grab some bubbly, and watch a performance online or catch a show live. It’s an easy way to travel back in time to see just how far the evolution of the tutu has come.

Remember, babes, tutus are for everyone! No matter your age, your size, or your style. And what’s better than a little trip through time? It’s an incredible reminder that while trends may come and go, a stunning tutu is a timeless piece of fashion magic.

Don’t forget to join me next Tuesday for more delightful Tutu Tuesdays! Let’s travel back to some even earlier times and see how tutus transformed from a simple, modest undergarment to the gorgeous dance icons they are today. And, oh yes, send me a message or tag me on Insta! I always love to hear from you and see you embracing those pink tutus, darling!
