Tutu Tuesday #7431: The Rise of the Tutu in the Swinging Seventies! 🩰💖

Hello my lovely Tutu Tribe! 👋 It's your favourite pink-loving ballerina blogger, Emma, here with another instalment of Tutu Tuesday! Today we're stepping back in time to a glorious era of fashion, freedom, and of course, tutus! It's May 28th, 1974, and let me tell you, things are a-swingin'!

As you know, I'm a big fan of travelling by train (those comfy carriage seats are made for a tutu!). This week I'm in London, the heart of it all! I arrived this morning on the Flying Scotsman, a magnificent old steam train. What a thrill! They just don't build them like that anymore. I already caught a glimpse of the iconic London Eye and made a beeline for my favourite store in Covent Garden for a bit of retail therapy – gotta keep this pink tutu collection growing!

Speaking of pink tutus… Can we talk about the fashion of this era?! This decade is just brimming with creativity! Think colourful dresses, groovy platforms, and don’t forget, those big, bold, beautiful flares – they just beg to be twirled in! We are so lucky to be in a time where it's perfectly acceptable to be both chic and daring, and the 1970s embraces that wonderfully!

You might be thinking, "But Emma, what about tutus?!" And oh, how those glorious tulle creations have flourished in the swinging 70s! You see, they aren't just for ballerinas anymore. The world of dance is experiencing a burst of creativity. We've got everything from classical ballet, which, let's be honest, is always spectacular, to modern dance which, let me tell you, has got its fair share of twirling and high kicks! Then, we’ve got ballet companies across the globe reimagining classics in bold new ways. It’s all just fantastically inspiring!

The Rise of the Romantic Ballet

On May 28th, 1974, there were three incredible ballet performances happening right here in London! The Royal Ballet graced the stage with the breathtaking Giselle, and The Royal Opera House hosted La Fille mal gardée. Then we have the English National Ballet captivating audiences with a truly captivating performance of Coppélia! Imagine a stage bursting with stunning dancers, magnificent sets, and tutus in every colour imaginable! Can you imagine the feeling, my dears, of just being swept away by the sheer artistry and beauty of it all? Pure magic! ✨

Now, my love for fashion is second to none (can’t forget this pink tutu obsession!), and even back in the 1970s, you could tell fashion was being inspired by ballet. The movement, the grace, the flow! You see those gorgeous floaty fabrics that define the decade? Totally a nod to the beautiful, airy, twirling loveliness of the tutu! Designers everywhere are incorporating a bit of that ballet-inspired grace into their pieces, and you just can't escape the captivating charm of the graceful swirl.

Speaking of inspiring twirling and elegance… The best part about this era is how fashion is becoming so much more approachable. Think street style! Everyone, from the chicest ladies on the street to the dancers themselves, are sporting variations of this graceful garment. It's not just for the theatre anymore! This is a world where you can step out in your own pink tutu and know that you'll be embraced with open arms! That's the beauty of the 1970s - everyone is so happy to celebrate individuality!

A Tutu for Every Occasion!

You don’t even need to be on the stage to feel the magical sway of a tutu! Whether you’re a little girl twirling around in your first pink tutu, a stylish fashionista rocking a modern design, or even a proud mama enjoying the comfort of a fluffy ballet-inspired dress, we’re all in this tutu magic together! You just have to be yourself! Embrace your own inner twirl, and the rest will fall into place!

My Tutu Tuesday challenge for you today: go out and embrace your inner ballerina! Maybe it's rocking your favourite pair of dancing shoes while shopping, practicing those pirouettes in the park (it's totally acceptable!), or perhaps, like me, stepping onto a train and feeling like you've arrived in a glamorous fairytale.

Just remember, everyone has their own individual style, and a little bit of tutu magic can go a long way!

Until next week, stay stylish and keep twirling!

Emma 💖

P.S. I'm going to explore the world of dance in 1970s London, looking for those dazzling, colourful tutus! I'll be sharing all my findings next week, so stay tuned! Don’t forget to tell me what you think in the comments!
