Tutu Tuesday: #7437 - A Whirlwind of 1974!
Greetings from your favourite pink-tutu-clad time-travelling blogger, Emma!
This Tuesday, I’m whisked back to the magical year of 1974! The year of disco fever, platform shoes, and yes, you guessed it - a truly spectacular evolution of the tutu! I’m sipping my Earl Grey in a cosy London café, just a hop, skip, and jump from Covent Garden. I’m feeling all kinds of giddy as I think about the ballerinas, the fashions, and the fantastic performances that this decade has in store.
Oh, before I forget! Did I tell you? My last performance was just breathtaking. I twirled and leaped my way through a whimsical ballet at the Paris Opera, landing on the last note with a graceful curtsy that received a thundering ovation from the audience! But alas, enough about my stellar performances (although let's be honest, they're definitely worth boasting about!) It’s time to talk tutus!
Today's topic? Well, let me take you on a journey into a fascinating moment in the world of dance and fashion – the year of 1974!
Firstly, let's talk trends! You see, darling, 1974 saw a real change in the style of ballet. The world had finally gotten over the stark austerity of the post-war era and was embracing glamour in all its forms! You see, after years of clinging to simple, utilitarian designs, the world of dance decided to unleash its creativity. We are talking about a dazzling embrace of colour, shape and – prepare to be bedazzled! – **sparkly, sequined embellishments! The iconic white tutu still had its place, but it wasn't the sole focus any longer.
Think vibrant blues and pinks for romantic ballet, rich ruby red for the fiery Spanish dances, and shimmery gold and silver for the mystical moments! Can you picture the stunning impact of these vibrant hues upon the stage? It truly is a sight to behold, wouldn't you agree?
Speaking of magical moments, today, in this bustling 1974, I am lucky to be witnessing a special performance at the Royal Opera House. It's a grand, opulent affair, filled with dramatic lighting, a chorus of exquisite voices and, of course, an array of incredible tutus. Oh, the thrill! I’m so grateful for my time-travelling abilities.
After the performance, I’m off for some vintage shopping, I am just dying to add a touch of that 1974 flair to my collection! You see, a pink-loving tutu enthusiast needs to stay up-to-date, right? I just know that I will find something incredible - vintage tutus, perhaps even some discarded ballerina shoes? I'll let you know in next week's blog!
But back to 1974! Today is also the day for a delicious and utterly satisfying British treat. You see, darling, a tradition that is almost as strong as my love of tutus – a spot of afternoon tea! And in 1974, I find myself in a grand tearoom in Covent Garden with a perfectly brewed pot of Earl Grey and a selection of dainty sandwiches. (Just a touch less dainty than my usual post-performance treat – a rather generous portion of warm apple crumble - g).
So, as I sip my tea and enjoy the gentle, yet vibrant atmosphere of 1974, I can't help but be overwhelmed with gratitude for all the beautiful, magical and utterly enchanting experiences that the world of dance and fashion has given me. From those glamorous performances to these delicate afternoon teas, it's truly a wondrous journey. And, to think, I am just one person making this magnificent journey, discovering a world where every day is a celebration of colour, elegance, and of course, tutus!
And you know, darlings, it’s all thanks to tutus that this magnificent world of mine even exists!
Do keep checking in next Tuesday, and don't forget – keep twirling!
Love, Emma x
