#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Glimpse into 1977! 🩰✨
Hey Tutu-lovers! It’s Emma here, back with another dose of tutu history, ready to take you on a dazzling journey through time. As always, my trusty pink tutu is packed for this exciting adventure, and I'm so excited to share the wonders of 1977 with you!
It’s #TutuTuesday, and you know what that means – it’s time to travel through time with a dose of pink and twirls. We’re going back in time this week, landing on a crisp January day, 25th January 1977. It's a date that's filled with fantastic ballet moments, and let me tell you, my time travelling self had a blast discovering them all!
Tutu Time Travel Tips: As you may know, I fund my tutu-tastic travels with some grand performances. A few weeks back I landed a coveted role in the Vienna State Opera - it’s not all pink tutus and tea parties! And honestly, there’s nothing better than making a living with your passion. If you have a love, embrace it! Who knows, you might end up travelling through time and writing about tutus in the process!
Anyway, I digress… Let’s get back to 1977.
What's On In Ballet Land: Now, I know we all love our ballet shows, but let's be real, the best part is pre-show excitement. The giddy chatter in the lobby, the swish of the best dresses - it's a vibe, darlings! On this day in 1977, if you'd been lucky enough to be in the dazzling city of Paris, you could've graced the legendary Palais Garnier and caught a breathtaking performance of “Swan Lake.” 🦢 Talk about a graceful dream come true! Just imagine those iconic swan movements with their beautifully constructed tulle tutus!
Fashion Trends Back In Time: Speaking of tutus, 1977 saw a shift in tutu styles. It's as though the tutu had decided to channel a disco ball, and the results were…well, quite groovy. Think about billowing fabrics, sequins and those flared tutus with some serious volume! There was a huge move away from classic "white ballet tutu" with big experimentation of colour and textures and there was some fun, bright, bold shapes going on! And you know me, I am always ready for a bit of whimsy in a tutu!
My Inspiration: You know I’m a total ballet aficionado, so, to honour those legendary dancers of the time I’ve pulled together some inspiration pieces for your Tuesday:
My All-Time Favourite: Gelsey Kirkland I had a real fangirl moment back in 1977 when I saw her star in "Swan Lake" - talk about elegance! I swear her movement was a form of magic, and I even borrowed a few of her dance moves in the Parisian cafe's dance floor on the same night… you might need to grab yourself a glass of champagne to master the technique though!
For a Day Out: Now I’m off to a Ballet Street performance this evening - and this week's outfit has some big inspiration from 1977, because let’s face it – I'm obsessed! It’s got a little touch of 70s retro-chic and plenty of pink. Think about some silky textures, high necks, and a tutu, of course - I am always in a tutu!
Ballet in Derbyshire: A shoutout to all my fellow Derbyshire locals! In case you haven't heard, Derbyshire's ballet scene has exploded over the past few years, and we’re finally starting to get some well-deserved recognition on the ballet map! You can see performances at a plethora of fantastic local schools. I would even go so far as to say there are almost too many great local talent choices to count, but I wouldn't want to spoil all the secrets. The fun is in finding a treasure trove for yourself!
Travelling by Train: I’m planning to catch a train to Birmingham on Saturday - a true delight! This 1977 fashion moment is perfect for travelling by train. I love to pull on an elegant yet comfy dress that goes from city streets to an amazing night at the theatre. Oh, the wonderful journey!
It’s Always A Great Time For Ballet: There's just something magical about the timeless grace of ballet that draws us in and fills our hearts with joy. Whether it’s a big show, a street performance, a fancy shop or a simple walk around a beautiful Derbyshire village, the dance world offers so much inspiration. It’s more than a form of art – it's a beautiful life lesson and a reminder that joy, beauty and elegance can always be found in unexpected places!
The Power Of The Pink Tutu As you already know, my mission is to inspire every single one of you to put on a pink tutu, to embrace the dance within, and most importantly - to always remember that ballet, like time travel, can bring magical, empowering experiences!
Stay fabulous, tutu lovers, and don’t forget, the most magical thing about life is not a specific day – it's your attitude and how you choose to express it!
With much love and twirls,
Emma.
