Tutu Tuesday #7579: A 1977 Fashion Flashback!
Hello, my darling tutu-lovers! It's your favourite pink-clad time traveller Emma, and this week's Tutu Tuesday takes us back to the groovy, glamorous year of 1977. Buckle your pointe shoes, darlings, we're off on a journey through time!
I always love stepping back to the seventies; the music, the fashion, the whole vibe! Just imagine a time when disco was king, flared trousers were the height of fashion, and platform shoes made every step a confident strut. The era of big hair, even bigger smiles, and that wonderful, free spirit. Oh, how I'd love to twirl in a vintage seventies disco!
And while we're on the subject of twirling, let's talk about tutus. 1977, you see, saw some truly glorious ballet creations on stage, with tutus evolving alongside the changing fashion trends. Think delicate tulle, flowing chiffons, and even touches of colour taking centre stage. Gone were the days of the rigid, stark white tutus of old. It was a time when ballerinas, like shimmering stars, expressed themselves with a bit more…dare I say it? personality.
This week, specifically, we're remembering 29th March, 1977. The ballet world was abuzz with excitement that day. In Paris, the Paris Opera Ballet premiered a new production of 'Don Quixote', and over in London, the Royal Ballet was enthralling audiences with their production of 'Swan Lake'. I can just imagine the electric atmosphere, the gasps of the crowd as the iconic white tutus danced under the spotlight. Talk about magic!
Of course, you can't forget the other things happening on that day in 1977. The news headlines were dominated by the beginning of the Egyptian peace talks. Talk about a time for optimism and hope! On a lighter note, Queen were busy rocking the charts with their single "We Are The Champions." Ah, music! It's a timeless language we all understand.
Now, a true fashionista like myself can't resist exploring the world of ballet fashion outside the theatre! Back in 1977, it seems tutus were a bit less "everyday" than they are now. But, oh my! I discovered some truly delightful bits of inspiration. The 'Seventies' embraced femininity, so think delicate blouses with flowing ruffles, long flowing skirts and even touches of lace – all pieces that wouldn't be out of place in a modern ballerina’s wardrobe. Remember that, my darlings! We are always fashionable, always chic, and always looking for inspiration!
Speaking of inspiration, I must share my favourite find! The colour pink was EVERYWHERE back then, just like now. A sign of my era’s timelessness! So it was with huge delight that I came across a picture from that day in 1977, showcasing a group of young ladies dressed in fabulous pink satin skirts - think flowing and wide - perfect for dancing and twirling in. You just couldn’t get away from the allure of pink in the seventies, even in London's Covent Garden! It was the perfect, dreamy colour, don't you think? It embodies the feminine elegance we all adore!
To finish this week's Tutu Tuesday, I encourage you to put on a little bit of pink, maybe some silky ribbons, or just add a little sparkle to your outfit! It’s time to dance, ladies. This is our time to shine, to let our light shimmer like a million little stars. I hope you all enjoyed this trip back to 1977 and are feeling as inspired and empowered as I am. Don't forget to tag me in your pink-tutu-tastic snaps on Instagram, darling, and spread the Tutu Love! Until next Tuesday!
